Project Overview:

Job Summary:

Assigned to the Construction organization as a Survey Engineer/Party Chief (PC), responsible for providing field and office support as required to the construction survey team. The PC reports directly to the Area Lead Surveyor (ALS). The PC interprets design drawings and specifications to determine associated commodities and equipment locations and provides direction and supervision to his/her assigned field survey team in support of the civil, structural, mechanical, and piping installations in the work area. 

Major Responsibilities:

The Survey Engineer/Party Chief (PC) duties include, but not limited to, the following:  

  • Support the survey team’s implementation of the project safety, quality, and environmental programs  
  • Provide technical direction to direct-hire survey crews.  
  • Provide support to both Field Engineering and Field Supervision  
  • Responsible for the accurate layout of construction work, recordation of field data according to job specifications and industry best practice 
  • Perform duties of a Party Chief on a direct-hire survey crew 
  • Utilize survey instruments in conformance with Bechtel survey procedures including Robotic Total Station, GNSS equipment, Digital Level and Laser Scanner 
  • Develop and maintain survey data  
  • Perform Calibration Baseline checks of survey instruments 
  • Support the administration of the survey work request program  
  • Perform and/or check survey computations as required in the performance of duties 
  • Perform as-built surveys of installed commodities  
  • Provide Civil project completion documentation including "As-Built" records 
  • Perform verifications of subcontract survey work  
  • Support the UAV/Drone team’s operations 
  • Support the Laser Scanning operations, including reality capture 
  • Support the Metrology team’s operations 
  • Providing direction and training to less experienced survey team members 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Multi-Disciplined Field Engineering Survey experience with earthwork, excavation, concrete, structural steel, mechanical, and piping, etc. installation layout and verification
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Incidents” safety program. 
  • Knowledge of Bechtel quality standards. Must have a solid record of successful project completion with little to zero rework
  • Knowledge of construction survey principles
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to industrial surveying field & office activities 
  • Demonstrated ability to always maintain a safe work ethic and work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment, able to formulate a working relationship with survey team members, other departments, contractors, and survey functional management
  • Self-starter, highly motivated, requiring little supervision, and able to work on multiple work fronts, with excellent problem-solving ability
  • Displays effective communications skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans in a clear and concise manner
  • Demonstrated experience with Trimble Robotic Total Stations, Digital Levels & GNSS survey systems, and Access field software
  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and Teams
  • Must have experience working on multiple work fronts, working under time constraints, and must be adaptable to changing conditions
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check, including verification of employment and education
  • Must be physically capable to participate in project walkdowns, which may require the following activities:  extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing in or maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces, and lifting up to 40lbs without assistance.
  • This project may have multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime, weekends and/or night shift when a business need arises

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Prior Bechtel Survey Mega-Project experience 
  • Working knowledge of Bechtel construction procedures 
  • Proficiency with 3D Survey CAD software, including the ability to perform and check digital computations for generation of survey layout data and drafting of as staked/as-built data; generate DTMs and compute volumes 
  • Experience with providing survey support for UAV/Drone operations 
  • Experience with Laser Scanning hardware and software a plus 
  • Experience with Metrology field & office activities a plus
