Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Senior Architect to join the CSA department within the Manufacturing and Technology Business Unit (M&T). The prime roles and responsibilities include -

  • Serves as lead or area lead architect on assigned project to develop an area from conceptual phase to EPC phase.

  • Applies broad and diversified knowledge of Architectural principles and practices to project architecture.

  • Makes decisions independently concerning problems on the project.

  • As assigned, represents the Project Engineering Manager on the project and with the client to resolve technical questions and as required to coordinate work.

  • Supervises and provides technical direction to subordinate architects, engineers, specialists, designers, and drafters as assigned.

  • Maintains contacts with client representatives as directed, with suppliers, appropriate field personnel, Project Field Engineers, and architectural and engineering disciplines to ensure the coordination of the work within the project or assignment and compliance with Bechtel/client requirements.

  • Knows applicable industry standards and codes, accepted design practices, and quality standards.


Job Dimensions

A. Supervision Received

  • Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from a Project Engineering Manager, Supervisor or Chief Engineer.

  • Accountable to the Architectural Design Manager - Assistant to the Project Engineer for:

    • Coordination of Engineering and Construction/Procurement activities, in accordance with the established technical quality standards, cost, and schedule.

    • The performance of select engineering tasks, in accordance with the established technical quality standards, cost, and schedule.

    • Ensuring that facilities and systems are installed in accordance with the engineering specifications and requirements.

  • Coordinates with the designer of record and provides field support during construction.

  • Ensures design documents reflect as-built conditions.

  • Manages the specification of construction hold points and inspection requirements.

  • Coordinates resolution of field questions related to field change notices and design change notices.

  • Ensures Resident Engineering tasks are completed within budget and ensures trends are processed for facility scope changes.

B. Supervision Exercised

  • Provides operational direction and technical guidance to subordinate architect, designer and detailer personnel as directed.

C. Contacts

  • Establishes and maintains communication with design and engineering supervisors in charge of related disciplines and with administrative personnel within the group or project. Consults with suppliers, design and construction subcontractors, technical specialists, other disciplines/functions, and client representatives as directed to provide and receive technical information and to ensure the coordination of the work within the project or assignment and compliance with Bechtel/client requirements.



  • Responsible for assigned activities and deliverables within an engineering or design discipline on the projects.

  • Applies broad knowledge of architectural and engineering principles and practices to project engineering in the preparation of designs and deliverables.

  • Prepares architectural layouts, elevations, cross-sections, and other architectural design deliverables for buildings from conceptual to EPC.

  • Prepares building and material specifications and related documents.

  • Prepares service requisitions and material requisitions, as well as conducting their technical bid evaluations. Prepares building material interface details.

  • Prepares architectural designs and construction drawings using 2-D / 3-D computer aided design (CAD), presentation graphics and architectural models.

  • Coordinates work and collaborates with other project engineering disciplines. Reviews design drawings and documents submitted by suppliers and subcontractors for compliance with architectural and engineering requirements.

  • Participates in studies that require knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in architectural work. Assists in preparation of forecasts, quantity take-offs and change orders.

  • Makes decisions concerning problems within the discipline on the project.

  • Represents the discipline on the project and with the client as directed to resolve technical questions.

  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of discipline engineers, specialists, designers and detailers.

  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.

  • Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).

  • Supports function initiatives of developing Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.

  • Coordinates with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work.


Qualifications and Skills:

Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelors or Master's degree in Architecture with 8 years related experience

  • Minimum of 2 years experience related to semiconductor/manufacturing facilities or industrial project types

  • A license to practice architecture from a recognized licensing board

Additional Qualifications:

  • A sufficient number of specialized courses in architectural design, planning, materials, construction methods and related architectural and engineering systems.
  • Working knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC), broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards and design criteria pertinent to the discipline, knowledge of design applicable safety, health, environmental regulations.

  • Knowledgeable in the building codes and regulations for the project location

  • Technical knowledge of architectural systems, applications of architectural methods, plant layout, materials, applications of computer software to architectural problems to ensure the design is cost effective, in accordance with project deliverables within the discipline.

  • Working knowledge of Revit and Navisworks.

  • Working knowledge of architectural and engineering procedures, covering discipline deliverables, production, and control, as well as organization and responsibilities for the Architecture Department.

  • Knowledge of business practices and project forecasting.

  • Experience in resolving complex technical problems and the ability to articulate explanations.

  • Excellent listening, oral, and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.

  • General knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort.

  • Knowledge of global business unit activities and operations including business development, legal, procurement, construction, Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H), and quality assurance.

  • Demonstrated ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.

  • Prior experience on executing work in EPC projects.

  • Prior work experience and responsibility for the supervision on a medium or major size project in architectural at Bechtel.

  • Experience in coordinating with global execution teams and offices.

  • Knowledge of Bechtel Engineering Department Procedures.

  • Prior experience in planning and executing greenfield or brownfield projects in one or more of the following market segments: Semiconductor, Electric Vehicle, Battery, or Data Center.
