Project Overview

Bechtel is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio. Bechtel will design and build Phase 1 of the Ohio One project, a total of 2.5 million square feet, including 600,000 square feet of cleanrooms. Construction will require as much steel as eight Eiffel Towers and as much concrete as the tallest skyscrapers.

Bechtel will strengthen future economic development in the region by partnering with the North America Building Trades Unions and suppliers to create several thousand new jobs and work with local education organizations to implement new training programs that will support the future talent pipeline.

An opportunity exists to work within the EHS team at one of our projects located in New Albany, Ohio.

 

Position Summary

Bechtel has a strong commitment to protecting people and the environment as part of its mission, and is known for industry leadership in Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS). EHS teams are comprised of three distinct disciplines that support our EHS Management System and processes at project sites and offices. These teams include environmental scientists, safety specialists, and industrial hygiene scientists. Collectively, they provide technical guidance and perform planning, risk assessment, inspections and monitoring, training, and data management.

 

The Environmental Scientist helps develop and execute the environmental component of an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. Key activities involve administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. The position involves practical application of biology, ecology, chemistry, social sciences, and related disciplines for managing environmental aspects of a project or facility. The position reports to the Project EHS Manager or Project Environmental Manager.

 

Responsibilities

  • Integrates environmental requirements into project planning, permitting, design, construction, commissioning and startup, and operations.
  • Assists with development and implementation of environmental permits, plans, and studies.
  • Performs site assessments and surveys to identify site conditions and develop mitigation and sustainability strategies to protect the environment and local communities.
  • Provides technical guidance and support regarding mitigation measures pertaining to natural and cultural resources and communities.
  • Provides technical assistance within EHS teams and to other project groups regarding permitting, risk assessment, plan preparation, studies, and EHS program execution.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the project Environmental Management Plan and associated plans and procedures.
  • Identifies and tracks environmental issues, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder concerns.
  • Participates in emergency response, and aids investigation and resolution of EHS incidents.
  • Performs environmental monitoring, sampling, and inspections to confirm compliance with permits and project requirements and commitments.
  • Prepares training documents and helps with EHS training for project/facility employees and visitors.
  • Participates in meetings with customers, project/facility team members, and contractors and subcontractors to advise them of environmental requirements that may affect their work.
  • Performs data management, trend analysis, and report preparation and review.
  • Assists other team members in EHS program execution, inclusive of safety and health.

 

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university or college in an applicable technical discipline such as environmental science, ecology, biology, natural resources, or related disciplines.
  • 4 or more years of experience related to applicable environmental sciences or regulatory requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge or experience in environmental impact assessment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills for preparing presentations, data management, and report preparation.
  • Analytical skills related to sampling, monitoring, and recordkeeping.
  • Adaptable and able to work outdoors in a field environment under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to support multiple work shifts, as needed, and a wide range of tasks.
  • Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 14001 Management System standards.
  • Specialized technical skills and knowledge related to an applicable environmental discipline.
  • Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities.
