Senior Lead Engineer - Rail /Transit Engineer

Job Summary

Bechtel has been awarded a contract to provide project management services for the Texas High-Speed Rail Project. The Infrastructure team will support Texas Central Partners through the development phase, from February 2018 to mid-2019, which will be followed by the execution phase. When completed, the project will serve the 240-mile corridor between Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth, with a travel time of 90 minutes.


The Senior Lead Engineer for transit engineering would be responsible for the D-B Contractors designs for the transit systems including rail systems, stations, tunnel ventilation, overhead catenary systems, and depots and would be reporting to Engineering Manager – Systems.


Job Responsibilities

  • Manage all relevant engineering activities so that they result in projects that are affordable and meet program requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for a time, cost and quality.
  • Directs and provides technical guidance to assigned discipline Engineers in the management of engineering on the project.
  • Integrates transit systems with various engineering (Civil, Structural, Architectural and Geotechnical) and rail systems engineering disciplines (HVAC, MEP, Rail Systems(which includes track, overhead line, signaling, telecommunications, control center and onboard/mobile signaling and telecommunications equipment), Traction Power, Medium & Low Power, Rolling Stock and RAMS).
  • Ensures that Technical Risk Assessments (e.g. HAZIDs, HAZOPs, IDCs/IDRs, QRAs) are comprehensive and complete, safety practices and procedures are implemented, and engineering design and corresponding documentation are in compliance with the associated projects Quality Assurance plan and procedures.
  • Oversight of the complex interfaces with transit systems design and the detailed design prepared by multiple design contractors on projects.
  • With knowledge of precedents in the transit systems, principles and practices of related technical areas and of coordinating work with other technical disciplines.

Job Qualification

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering along with 13 years of experience in transit systems OR in lieu of a degree must have a minimal of 19 years of relevant experience.
  • Must have 15 years’ transit systems design and design supervision complex commuter, metro or light rail infrastructure projects.
  • Must have 10 years supervising the transit systems design of major commuter, metro or light rail infrastructure projects.
  • Must have 5 years of major design-build project supervision of major commuter, metro or light rail infrastructure projects.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of CENELEC and IEC standards pertaining to transit systems, engineering safety and RAMS.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of AREMA standards pertaining to civil infrastructure, transit systems and engineering safety.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of the Federal Code of Regulations risk analysis requirements for System Safety and Security.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of NPFA 130 for designing infrastructure for Transit System Guideways and Stations.
  • Possess knowledge of testing, commissioning and start-up of rail systems and handover to transit authorities.
  • Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards and design criteria in all engineering disciplines.
  • Experienced in permitting requirements and proficient in the successful management of design approvals from relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Must have the authorization to work in the USA.
