Senior Engineer (Guideway Structures)

Job Summary

Bechtel has been awarded a contract to provide project management services for the Texas High-Speed Rail Project. The Infrastructure team will support Texas Central Partners through the development phase, from February 2018 to mid-2019, which will be followed by the execution phase. When completed, the project will serve the 240-mile corridor between Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth, with a travel time of 90 minutes. Three stations are currently planned (Dallas/Fort Worth, the Brazos Valley, and Houston), and they will provide connectivity to highways and public transit networks. The bullet trains will carry commuters on regular intervals during peak and non-peak hours.


The Senior Engineer for Guideway Structures will support all Structural design activities associated with the guideway above ground elements of the Project and the method of delivery and will report directly to the Engineering Manager. These include aerial guideway, bridge and misc. structures. The work encompasses managing the preparation of engineering design drawings, specifications, studies, calculations and reports for the Project via the D-B Contractor.


Job Responsibilities

  • Manage the technical work of the discipline engineers, designers, and drafters from the D-B Contractor.
  • Maintain the technical quality of work, including compliance with project design criteria and standards, project procedures, relevant corporate standards, and local codes and regulations.
  • Review design calculations, drawings, and specifications related to their discipline and required for the project.
  • When required, seal the design drawings and specifications for assigned engineering work.
  • Support general group planning, from initial project planning to project completion.
  • Monitor and Control engineering scope, plans, schedules and budgets as assigned.
  • Coordinate assigned engineering work and interfaces with other organizations, disciplines, vendors, consultants, and clients, as well as outside permitting agencies.
  • Prepare technical inputs for requisitioning technical consultants and engineered subcontracts and performing bid evaluations as assigned.
  • Manage all work performed by subcontractors as assigned. Coordinate all discipline input and review of project capital cost estimates, monitoring quantities against baseline estimates.
  • Participate and incorporate constructability reviews.
  • Visit client, job site and consultant offices as needed to support the project’s needs.


Job Qualifications

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering along with 9-13 years of experience in structural design OR in lieu of a degree must have a minimum of 15-19 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in with TxDOT structures is desirable.
  • Experience in the analysis and design of concrete and steel structures and coordination of multi-discipline designs.
  • Experience with design of bridges and guideway structures is essential.
  • Prepare structural design calculations and drawings for buildings modifications and additions to concrete and steel structures.
  • Utilize computer and computer codes to perform analyses and designs of structures.
  • Knowledge of building/bridge design and familiar with AASHTO & ACI.
  • Must have the authorization to work in the USA.
