Position Summary:

The Senior Battery Specialist will support the Manufacturing & Technology business with deep understanding of battery chemistry or battery manufacturing. This individual will maintain relationships with academia and industry experts to track latest technology advances. Makes recommendations on which technologies and prospects to pursue. Represents Bechtel in discussions with or presentations to client management or senior technical personnel, and in so doing may affect Bechtel’s image or objectives.

 

Job Dimensions:

Supervision Received

  • Receives administrative supervision from the Discipline Chief or other group/department managers with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.

Supervision Exercised

  • Provides functional guidance to engineers, scientists, or technicians; however, is not typically responsible for staff planning or salary

             administration.

Contacts

  • Maintains continuing contact with senior management, client technical decision-makers, client representatives, suppliers, regulatory authorities, educational institutions, and professional societies as required to obtain and exchange information pertinent to assignments. Maintains contact with outside consultants.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as subject matter expert on battery materials (components, batteries, and recycling) or battery manufacturing.
  • Develops and maintains deep understanding of battery chemistry or battery manufacturing, including latest technical advances in academia and industry.
  • Utilizing Technology Readiness Level (TRL) Assessment model to make recommendations to management on which technologies in which to focus resources and prospects to pursue.
  •  Reviews engineering or scientific concepts, proposals, drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  •  Participates in business development activities and proposal development efforts.
  • Provides guidance and direction to specialty scientific or engineering personnel in the development of advanced design criteria and specifications.
  • Screens and recommends selection of outside consultants; coordinates their activities and monitors their performance.
  • Interprets new or special governmental regulations, engineering codes, standards, criteria, and performance data.
  • Takes an active and visible role, representing Bechtel at professional conferences and on committees.
  • Manage all aspects of the technology, concept development, and support the business development units.
  • Collaborate with business development and solution teams for giga manufacturing design, mass production and supplier selection.
  • Provide technology leadership and technical advice & guidance to management on future technology trends and area to invest.
  • Compile and maintain benchmark data, such as industry technology roadmaps, industry committed goals, technical developments and metrics, public announcements, and government mandates.

 

Job Knowledge:

  • Substantial technical knowledge in battery chemistry or battery manufacturing.
  • Knowledge and experience in large scale powder handling systems. 
  • Prior experience in running large scale furnaces, spray dryers or mixing equipment for industrial production of solid powders
  • Experience in handling large scale industrial solvent (similar to NMP or DMAc) – processing and recovery
  • Experience in large scale projects from start to finish, 
  • Lead through knowledge as an individual expert and strong collaborator, 
  • Stay on top of the application field through individual network as well as published knowledge through academic and government projects,  
  • Experience and expertise in lithium battery product design, engineering and technical development of giga cell manufacturing
  • Knowledge of scientific or engineering systems, calculations, applications and construction methods and materials.
  • Thorough knowledge of industrial and regulatory standards and design criteria in the engineering or scientific discipline.
  •  Skill in oral and written communications.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Chemical or other applicable engineering or scientific discipline and 14+ years of progressive work experience, or PhD degree and 10+ years of experience.
  • 7+ years of battery chemistry or battery manufacturing experience.
  • Oral, written and graphic communication and presentation skills.
  • Flexible to work across different time zones

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of battery manufacturing systems and equipment.
  • Experience in sizing and evaluating equipment required for battery component production or battery manufacturing facilities.
  • Understanding of standard industry practices and trends regarding manufacturing automation systems, programmable logic controllers, and applications of such systems in battery manufacturing.
  • Experience in development and scaling of new manufacturing processes. 
  • Experience with applicable process and chemical engineering codes and standards.
