PDP - Assistant Chief Engineer (Gurugram)

Exp Level: 20+ years


Minimum 20 years’ experience in plant layout and piping system design including conceptual and detailed engineering in Oil Gas & Chemical projects (including ISBL & OSBL); Power projects (power island systems & equipment, Balance of Plant systems & equipment); knowledge of interfaces; knowledge of piping materials; knowledge of piping stress analysis; knowledge of international codes & standards including ASME codes, NFPA etc.; Hands-on experience in developing layout, specifications, material requisition and vendor print review. Experience of leading large teams (minimum 30 personnel) on at least 2 projects along with discharging functional responsibilities such as training, recruitment, resource and career planning is required.






Evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications. Performs/manages overall design and engineering tasks, within the piping discipline. Assists in the on-the-job training of engineers & designers assigned. Understands roles played by other disciplines on the project. Contacts counterparts in other disciplines, supplier/client representatives and project field personnel, as required during execution of the project.


Acts independently on field related technical matters.


Provides technical/expert support to project teams and ensures technical quality.


Conducts annual performance reviews for direct reports and manages, reviews, and approves performance reviews prepared by supervisors.  Holds career development discussions.


Inputs to and owns the engineering elements of a project capital estimate (proposals and execution) quantities and budgets for the discipline.  Inputs to, reviews and influences project schedule.


Reviews project staffing requirements and assigns qualified technical personnel from within the discipline.


Directs the development of and approves design guides, standard specifications, work processes, Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and design procedures in the discipline and oversees coordination between disciplines.


Assist in establishing the discipline training needs, obtain budgeting approval and direct the development of personnel training programs.


Reviews unusual or complex design problems provides guidance for their solution either personally, by subordinate staff or by outside consultants.


Experience of Cryogenic Piping will be an added advantage.








A recognized degree (B.E./B. Tech – full time course) in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university.


Experience of working in field engineering, startup, commissioning or plant operation will be an added advantage. Technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods, application of computer aided engineering and design tools to engineering problems; knowledge of industry and regulatory standards; knowledge of 3D tools like PDS, SP3D, etc. Good oral and written communication is a requirement.


Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.


Knowledge of systems, calculations, BSAPs, applications of methods, materials and the use of computers and 2-D and 3-D computer aided design (CAD) automation within the discipline.


Knowledge of industry and regulatory codes and standards and design criteria used in the discipline.


Knowledge of corporate and global business unit activities and administrative practices.


Knowledge of practices and procedures for project control, construction, procurement, quality assurance, environmental safety and health; of the EPC and TIC (total installed cost) businesses; and of the proposal and bid processes.


Skill in oral and written communication.


Position requires:

◦A recognized degree in an engineering discipline, from an accredited college or university, AND or

◦A professional license in an engineering discipline,  from a recognized licensing board.


Extensive progressive work experience, including supervision, preferably in project and staff design engineering, design or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or engineering/construction firms.


Good working knowledge of application of 2-D and 3-D CAD tools in development of conceptual designs and production design deliverables of some complexity.
