2020 Student Internship (U.S.) - Environmental, Safety & Health

Bechtel has a strong commitment to protecting people and the environment as part of its mission, and is known for industry leadership in Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H, also known as HSE).  ES&H interns work within our ES&H and project teams, assisting with implementation of our ES&H Management System and processes. This includes planning, training, site assessment, hazard analysis, data management, and field work.  They assist our skilled and diverse ES&H professionals under supervision of a mentor and the ES&H Manager on a project.

The total number of hires and start dates are subject to workload and business conditions.  Locations will vary based on project needs and may include Houston, TX; Reston, VA; or various project sites.

General Job Duties

ES&H interns may assist at an office or a project that can be a construction site or a facility.  Tasks can include assisting with:

  • Review of safety, health, or environmental technical documents;
  • Site assessment, hazard identification, and mitigation/controls to protect people and the environment;
  • Preparation of training documents and presentations;
  • Strategies for continual improvement and enhancing employee engagement;
  • Site inspections and monitoring for ES&H compliance with contract and regulatory requirements; and
  • Data management, trend analysis, and report preparation.


Basic Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university obtaining a BS or MS degree in one of the following disciplines: 1) Occupational Safety; 2) Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Health; or 3) Biological or Environmental Sciences with a field emphasis?
  • Completed at least one year of undergraduate studies 
  • Completed relevant science coursework with a strong GPA;
  • Eligible to work and remain in the U.S. without sponsorship;
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills;
  • Ability and willingness to relocate and travel to domestic or international project sites; and
  • Adaptable and able to work in a field environment under various outdoor conditions.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently in a Master of Science degree program at an accredited university or college;
  • Majoring in one of the following disciplines: 1) Safety Management; 2) Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Health; or 3) Environmental or Biological sciences;
  • Completed relevant coursework with a strong GPA; and
  • Skills in data management and statistical analysis.
