2019 University Graduates (U.S.) - Tanks Engineer

The Tanks Business Line (TBL) develops and delivers these products and services with a commitment to safety, innovative, timely, cost – effective and high – quality project execution. Trainees normally begin their rotational assignment in our engineering department although business needs and staffing requirements sometimes dictate otherwise, e.g. an initial assignment to a project jobsite with a focus on tank construction activities. As a result, initial job duties and responsibilities will vary depending upon the nature of the initial assignment.  

Engineering department initial duties may include:

  • Learn the tank and pressure vessel terminology
  • Become knowledgeable of industry standards and codes and be able to apply them to our work
  • Prepare design calculation packages to support engineering design and EPC phases of projects
  • Develop technical procedures, drawings and specifications for work execution
  • Assist more experienced engineers in preparing, reviewing and coordinating deliverables
  • Assist with the preparation of requisitions for material and equipment purchases
  • Assist in design review and checks
  • Participate in review of supplier documentation for compliance with specifications
  • Gain basic understanding of project performance reporting
  • Become conversant with API 650 and API 620
  • Work closely with other departments to ensure we are meeting the needs of projects and delivering the best quality possible
  • Maintain the highest level of safety awareness and ensure all tasks are completed to the highest safety standards


Construction jobsite initial duties may include:

  • Hands – on work, escalating in complexity as the trainee gains experience and confidence in construction jobsite activities
  • Unloading, grinding, rigging, fitting and welding
  • Layout, by hand, and with instruments
  • Hanging steel
  • Operating and maintaining equipment
  • Non – destructive examination (NDE)
  • Daily interaction with jobsite supervision about work sequencing and preparation
  • Participation in the direction of craft personnel
  • Participation in writing of site instructions and procedures
  • Data analysis and problem solving.
  • Conducting job walks
  • Perform all the above activities while maintaining the highest level of safety awareness and ensuring all tasks are completed to the highest safety standards


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Civil/ Structural Engineering preferred. Candidates with degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Welding or other engineering disciplines may be considered provided they demonstrate a keen interest in our work and/or excel in structural design.
  • An engineering degree earned within the past 12 months is a pre – requisite, as is a GPA of 2.8 or higher, and submittal of undergraduate transcripts.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the US without visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Some previous practical work experience in engineering or construction industry highly desirable, e.g. summer internship, co – op assignment.
  • Excellent skills with visualization and understanding in 3D
  • Must be able to prepare hand calculations in a complete and organized manor
  • Strong interest in structural engineering/design
  • Eager to learn all aspects of storage tank structural design for all storage tank types and configurations
  • Good people and leadership skills
  • Flexible in job location; willingness to relocate or spend time at a job site
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary, multinational teams
  • Excellent command of the English Language (spoken/written skills)
  • Belief in a "Zero Accidents" safety philosophy
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point), 2D & 3D CAD
