Superintendent - Piping Testing NS

Project Overview:

Pennsylvania Chemicals is a world-scale facility that will produce 1.6 million tons of polyethylene per year, comprising of two gas phase polyethylene trains and one slurry phase polyethylene train. Over 1000 workers will be engaged in the PE team at peak construction. The balance of facilities on the project include an ethylene cracker unit, a gas-fired combined cycle cogeneration power plant, a large rail yard and other OSBL facilities. The overall project will involve up to 6,000 workers during its construction and is expected to employ 600 permanent employees when completed. The construction site is located in the Ohio River Valley north-west of Pittsburgh.


 Roles & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for field construction operations for piping scope.
  • Provides leadership for environmental, safety, health, injury/accident and fire prevention on the project. 
  • Monitors area for unsafe conditions, behaviors and practices and take appropriate corrective action to mitigate and eliminate. Enforce safe work behaviors and practices at all times in conjunction with the Area HSSE team.
  • Ensure that project processes and local/national safety codes, requirements and standards are being complied with within assigned area of responsibility. Ensures the Zero Accident Philosophy is incorporated into every aspect of construction operations, and actively participates in the project safety program.

·        Leads the preparation and implementation of the medium term and short term planning to achieve the project schedule and budget control with support from Field Engineering, and Project Controls.

  • Provide input into work package planning and scoping including means and methods, sequencing, and resource loading.
  • Determines workforce labor and construction equipment requirements.
  • Ensures work is performed in accordance with project quality expectations and requirements, the most current design document is used to complete the work and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation.
  • Approves craft time records using established automated tools.
  • Provides input to Field Engineering for quantity tracking and report weekly installed quantities.
  • Prepares reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecast.
  • Ensures permanent plant materials are stored and preserved in accordance with specifications and project requirements
  • Monitors tool usage on the site. Requisitions for tools and consumables and ensures that the workforce has the tools required to be productive.
  • Responsible for the implementation of project policies, procedures and instructions within assigned operations.
  • Performs workforce employee reviews and identifies training and development opportunities for subordinate personnel.
  • Coordinates with other discipline superintendents area construction work activities and plans.
  • Prepares material requisitions for tools and consumables and coordinate through Procurement to obtain these materials.
  • Plans the manpower and equipment required to execute the job.

  • Must be willing to work Nightshift


 Basic Qualifications: 

·         Knowledge of heavy industrial piping construction operations.

·         10+ years of relevant heavy industrial construction experience, in piping discipline

·         5+ years’ experience in a superintendent role.

·         Demonstrated commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and commitment to a Zero Accident safety program.

·         Extensive knowledge of, and experience in, the supervisory functions relating to field activities on large scale industrial projects.

·         Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

·         Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.

·         Experience working with, supervising and administering a direct hire workforce.

·        Strong technical knowledge of pipe hydrotesting and pneumatic pipe testing processes and work steps, including disassembly and re-instatement of pipe systems. 

·        Experienced with torque and tensioning methods of bolted flange connections. Excellent problem-solving ability along with experience of safety/quality protocols.
