Lead Field Engineer - Piping

Project Overview:

Pennsylvania Chemicals is a world-scale facility that will use ethane to produce 1.6 million tonnes of polyethylene per year. The project will involve up to 6,000 workers during its construction and is expected to employ 600 permanent employees when completed. The ethylene / polyethylene complex will be located in the Ohio River Valley north of Pittsburgh. It comprises an ethane cracker and three polyethylene units, plus OSBL including a gas-fired combined cycle cogeneration unit and a large storage-in-transit rail yard.


Role Overview:

Has primary responsibility for review of piping design drawings for quantity takeoffs, quantity tracking, field material requisition requirements, knowledge of the work scope, technical issues, storage and maintenance requirements, perform in-process and final inspections and assure that the mechanical equipment / piping installation proceeds and has been completed in accordance with the applicable drawings, codes, specifications, and standards. 


  • Is responsible for working with the Responsible Superintendent and supporting the work planning, scheduling and sequencing of the rotating equipment installation.
  • Also works with the engineering and procurement organizations to ensure that design documents, drawings and vendor manuals are on site prior to the receipt of the equipment. 
  • Verifies installed quantities by visual inspection of the completed work
  • Must be familiar with accepted mechanical codes and standards (e.g. – API Standards, ASME, NFPA, etc.)
  • Assists the Field Procurement Supervisor in the inspection and receipt of equipment and in the setting up of job site controls for storage and protection of equipment.
  • Coordinates and documents client and vendor required verification of mechanical / piping installations and tests.
  • Performs inspections of equipment installation work in progress on a continuing basis, witness tests and completes final P&ID check prior to turnover.  Develops punch lists and monitors completion of punch items. Assists in securing the necessary client acceptance documentation for record. Prepares and has full responsibility for managing mechanical equipment QC records to ensure that they are fully completed and properly submitted in a timely manner to Document Control.


Basic Qualifications

  • Prior Mechanical Engineering experience is required.
  • Minimum 10 years Bechtel experience required.
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Experience in oil, natural gas, refinery, petrochemical, minerals processing, or electrical power projects in a construction or design office environment.
  • Experienced with Bechtel SWPP’s and BSAP’s
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
  • Excellent problem solving ability

Grade 27

On a medium to large-sized project, performs the duties of a lead engineer in an area, coordinating and directing a variety of disciplines, or performs duties as a Project Field Engineer, coordinating activities related to the operation of assigned operating section of the jobsite.


Grade 26

On a large project, functions as a lead discipline engineer, coordinating related discipline activities and interfacing with other areas/disciplines on the jobsite.

On a small to medium-sized project, performs the duties of a lead engineer in an area, coordinating and directing a variety of disciplines, or performs the duties as a Project Field coordinating activities related to the operation of the assigned operating section of the jobsite.


Additional Information

Work includes field inspections and the physical ability to conduct field inspections which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces and working in small or confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress). Must be able to use appropriate standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e. harness, life vest, lift buckets, etc.).
