Job Summary:

A. Supervision Received 
Receives administrative oversight from the Mechanical Chief Engineer within the global business unit, who provides broad objectives and guidelines. Operational supervision is provided by the Project Engineering Manager.


B. Supervision Exercised
Directs assigned Engineers, Technical Specialists and Designers on a project.  

C. Contacts:
Communicates with the client to discuss Mechanical engineering scope, progress updates, coordination, and quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.  

This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership  #LI-AM3

Major Responsibilities:

  • Directs and manages mechanical design and engineering activities for projects of medium to large scale.
    Manages complex interactions among multiple Bechtel entities or client-mandated collaborations with other contractors as required.
    Facilitates access to specialists in advanced technologies relevant to the project and establishes communication mechanisms to effectively leverage their expertise within the engineering process.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of administrative practices.
    Supports the project engineering manager in setting up the comprehensive engineering execution plan and the creation of the project's mechanical engineering budget and timeline.
    Responsible for providing inputs to, and owning, the engineering components of a mechanical estimate including quantities, jobhours and budgets for both proposals and execution phases.
  • Performs and manages the work in accordance with relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design guides and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
    Establishes mechanical engineering schedule in collaboration with all engineering disciplines.
    Prepares, approves or recommends approval of mechanical engineering project procedures on a project.
  • Collaborates actively with the Project Engineering Manager, Procurement, Construction, Startup, Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H), and Project Controls to align mechanical engineering tasks.
    Supervises mechanical engineering activities associated with the preparation of project proposals, including estimating personnel requirements, reviewing quantities and scopes, developing schedules, and ensuring coordination with the Chief engineer.
    Conducts annual performance reviews in accordance with approved procedures and holds career development discussions.
  • Reviews and approves mechanical engineering design documents, change orders, material requisitions and specifications for construction or procurement use.
    Oversees the preparation of reviews and approves bid analyses and recommendations for the procurement of mechanical equipment, materials, and services.
    Responsible for addressing and resolving mechanical engineering-related field or jobsite issues.
  • Conducts site visits as necessary to facilitate the exchange of information.
    Facilitates collaboration and alignment in the mechanical engineering team involved in the project.
  • Initiates Bechtel/Client correspondence related to the mechanical engineering portion of the contract.
  • Reviews mechanical engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and takes corrective action when required.
    Recommends key personnel to Engineering Management for project assignments.
  • Supports Technical Risk Assessments, safety protocols and ensures mechanical engineering procedures follow the project's Quality Assurance plan and procedures.
    Effectively conveys complex technical matters and offers suitable recommendations to clients, project and functional management.
  • Champions the creation of a project work environment, supported by leadership on the project/program, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A recognized degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional license in a recognized licensing board (or international equivalent) is preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive work experience, including supervision, preferably in project and staff design engineering but may include other relevant types of engineering including startup, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants utilities, process plants or engineering/construction firms.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Technical knowledge of related mechanical engineering systems, engineering calculations using standard software, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials, and engineering application of computers.
  • Knowledge in a wide range of mechanical equipment such as Chiller packages, HVAC equipment, Compressors, pumps, skid mounted packages, heat transfer equipment, Pressure Vessels, Scrubbers, Fire-protection and exhaust systems.
  • Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved and current knowledge of new methods of design and construction. 
  • Knowledgeable in industry and regulatory codes and standards, as well as facilitating coordination for necessary approvals.
  • Proficient in both oral and written communication.
  • Proven ability to lead and supervise mechanical engineering teams of varying sizes.
  • Experience with modular design projects is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience in planning and executing greenfield or brownfield projects in one or more of the following market segments: Semiconductor, AI Data Center, Life Sciences / Pharma or EV Batteries.
  • Must have the right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.
