Project Overview:

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.  This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come. This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.

Job Summary:

The Geotechnical Field Engineer position is assigned to the construction group to provide support and oversight to the exploration and earthworks activities at the project site.

Major Responsibilities:

•    Perform quantity takeoffs and process permanent plant material requisitions. 
•    Design of temporary shoring.
•    Ensure required discipline specific excavation and backfill permits are initiated and routed for approval and manage the excavation and backfill process.
•    Maintain and update the excavation and backfill permit logs.
•    Review Excavation permits to ensure existing utilities and hazards are clearly identified before signing “Pre-Excavation Discipline Review” or signing “Approval to Proceed”
•    Field Engineering oversight of mass excavation and mass fill construction activities.
•    Field Engineering oversight of testing activities including borehole logs of soils and rocks, field testing, laboratory testing, in-situ testing, interpretation of reports, and verification of recommendations.
•    Field Engineering verification of excavation and backfill work.
•    Review and acceptance of subcontractor submittals.
•    Monitor the progress of work and conduct a daily safety inspection.
•    Monitor the progress of work for compliance with Site Excavation Permit requirements when required.
•    Complete the Excavation Safety Report.
•    Acceptance of installed geotechnical designs.
•    Assist Field Engineers and Construction with technical problems to facilitate appropriate solutions.
•    Participate in geotechnical design calculations as required.
•    Manage specifically assigned project activities. 
•    Ensure prompt corrective measures are taken to eliminate existing or potential hazards.
•    Act as the Competent Person Field Engineer for all Site Excavation and Backfill activities.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Required bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

•    Experience with Large EPC or Nuclear construction projects.  
•    Experience with Field Change Documents (FCD), Request for Information (RFI), Non-Conformance Reports (NCR), etc.
•    Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings, specifications, and material requisitions and of construction methods for foundations and associated excavations and fill.
•    Experience with CAD software including SmartPlant 3D, Bentley MicroStation, or equivalent.
•    Experience working in a certified Quality Program project such as ISO 9001, NQA-1, or equivalent.
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office, MathCAD, and associated programs or equivalent.
•    Understands work processes of other disciplines and departments on projects.
•    Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.
•    Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen, and background check.

•    Necessary skills to present technical subjects with competence and confidence.
•    Planning and organizational skills are essential.
•    Excellent listening, oral, and written communication abilities.
