Field Welding Engineer

The Field  Welding Engineer duties include and not limited to interpreting welding design drawings and specifications, field verification of materials, welder qualification, Pre and Post Weld Heat Treatment, performing weld examination, weld mapping and tracking. This position is not considered the design authority for the project, the field welding engineer is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of Bechtel’s welding program. 

  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues relating to the welding discipline. 
  • Establish a welding design/field engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Project Engineer, including agreement on welding engineering deliverables and overall construction application configuration management. 
  • Responsible for tracking, reporting and forecasting for welding discipline. 
  • Provide interface with Supervision, Field Engineers, and Craftsmen to specify the welding criteria for construction and any temporary construction aids or facilities as required. 
  • Direct the preparation of requisitions for field procured filler materials, consumable gasses, and equipment including weld consumables. 
  • Approve field requisitions as delegated by the Field Construction Manager. 
  • Review material receiving reports and warehousing to assure delivery of correct welding materials. 
  • Coordinate and monitor the interface between the construction automation plan and the project controls program at the jobsite. 
  • Implement and manage the corporate issued construction welding & NDE program. 
  • Direct preparation of cost estimates for welding construction activities and coordinate the preparation of cost reports, forecast and progress reports. 
  • Coordinate with Field Supervision, field engineering, and/ or Subcontractors to plan and support construction schedules. 
  • Provide direction for welding procedures to be utilized by Field Supervision to ensure construction operations are within requirements of engineering design specifications  and the applicable codes of construction. 
  • Work with owner representatives and operating personnel as necessary to coordinate welding construction activities. 
  • Provide oversight of any subcontract welding or NDE activities to ensure the desired quality and compliance to project specifications and applicable construction codes and standards. 
  • Implement controls over variables affecting welding installation progress such as weld consumables, documentation and welder certification. Also ensure engineering and procurement provide timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment and that other corporate programs are fully utilized. 
  • Provide technical input for subcontract changes regarding the welding discipline. 
  • Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management. 
  • Validate and submit quantities for weld Quantity Unit Rate Report (QURR) tracking. 

  

 

 

 

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline from an accredited university plus a minimum of six (6) years of relevant work experience, or twelve (12) years relevant welding & NDE industry related experience in the absence of a degree. 
  • Have thorough experience and knowledge of the construction welding operations and installations. 
  • Demonstrate commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H).  
  • Demonstrate a commitment to a Zero Accident safety program. 
  • Must be computer-literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications. 
  • Must be familiar with current industry construction codes and standards. 
  • Basic ability to utilize the current automated systems such as TeamWorks and Welding Inspection Tracking System (WITS) as the Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs). 
  • Basic knowledge of Project Technical Requests (PTR) for routing and resolving Requests for Information (RFIs), Field Change Documents (FCDs), and Non Conformance/Compliance Reports (NCRs) between project sites, contractors, clients, and home office. 
  • Basic knowledge of work packaging and basic ability to manipulate completions module and PunchWorks for interface with the start-up team. 
  • Must have the training and experience to take and pass Bechtel VT Level II certifications.
