Area Lead Surveyor Pipeline and Desalination Plant


Provide support as required to the construction team reporting directly to the Lead Survey Field Engineer or his/her delegate.  Activities relating to construction engineering, layout of foundation locations, equipment locations, structural steel placement, piping, subcontracts, and engineering liaison with the design functional group.  Use design drawings, model and specifications to determine associated plant and equipment locations.


Works with field engineering to support field verification of materials as appropriate and needed.


Provides technical support as related to survey to Field Engineering and Superintendents in a wide range of situation and configurations. Multi-Disciplined Field Engineering responsibilities with earthwork, excavation, concrete, structural steel, mechanical, and piping, etc. installation experience.


Leads a team or teams that work outdoors in all weather conditions. Works under time constraints and must be adaptable to changing conditions and priorities and may be required to work extended work schedules or night shift.


Position Duties/Responsibilities


The Area Lead Surveyor’s duties include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Leads the oversight of survey works by direct hire surveyors in a given area or areas, coordinating all Survey activities, manage Survey Subcontract and resources if applicable
  • Provide Construction Survey support to both Field Engineering and Field Supervision
  • Establish and/or verify and maintain the project’s survey control network
  • Supervise direct hire and/or subcontracted survey crews, including verification of survey crews’ control points and work
  • Responsible for checking the accurate layout of construction work, recordation of field data according to job specifications and appropriate methods of performing survey activities
  • Support the survey team’s implementation of the project safety, quality and environmental programs
  • Develop and maintain survey data
  • Oversight of the Calibration Baseline checks of survey instruments
  • Support the administration of the survey work request program
  • Perform and/or check survey computations as required in the performance of duties
  • Oversee Civil project completion documentation including "As-Built" records
  • Oversight of the preparation of survey CAD drawings as required in the performance of duties, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volumes computations for quantity tracking verification
  • Responsible for the training of subordinates


Minimum Requirements

  • Survey Engineering/Technical degree preferred or equivalent work experience/qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years Industrial Surveying experience with at least 5 years’ in supervisorial capacity
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Accidents” safety program
  • Knowledge of Bechtel quality standards
  • Knowledge of construction survey principles
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field activities
  • Working knowledge of Bechtel construction procedures
  • Displays effective communications skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans in a clear and concise manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment, able to formulate a working relationship with other departments and contractors
  • Demonstrated proficiency with modern survey techniques and technology including:
  • Network Least Squares Adjustment Software
  • Dimensional Control
  • 3D Laser Scanning
  • UAV (Drones)
  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Must have work authorization and right to remain in the Chile



Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of the use of subcontracts; knowledge of the contractor/ subcontractor’s responsibilities contained in subcontract documents. Prior experience supervising and administering subcontractors
  • Demonstrated proficiency with 3D Survey CAD software, including the ability to perform or check digital computations for generation of survey layout data and drafting of as staked/as-built data
  • Knowledge of Network Least Squares Adjustment software
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Robotic Total Stations and Digital Levels
  • Demonstrated proficiency with GPS/GNSS (Static & RTK) work process
  • Familiarity with current industry quality standards and best practices. 
  • General awareness of environmental laws
  • Awareness of government compliance standards
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English
