We are recruiting a Business Development Manager, Rail for UK & Ireland to support the growth of Bechtel’s business delivering major rail programmes.  Bechtel has an established reputation for delivering the most complex and challenging rail programmes, having overseen delivery of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the extension of the Jubilee line, West Coast Mainline Modernisation, Reading Station upgrade and Great Western Electrification and currently involved in Crossrail and HS2 Phase 2B.

The UK is looking at substantial further upgrades to the rail network over the next decade through HS2, multiple ‘levelling up’ schemes and a substantial investment in electrification and modernisation of the existing network.  Rail is also going through substantial change in the wake of the Williams Review and the announcement of the Integrated Rail Plan. This changing and complex landscape represents a substantial opportunity for Bechtel and we are looking for a talented business development professional to lead our growth in this area.

Position Summary

We’re looking for an experienced Rail Business Development Manager to join Bechtel and become a key leader within our business development team.  This role will lead on building relationships and securing work that is both commercially attractive and enhances our reputation with rail customers across UK & Ireland including Network Rail, Transport for London, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and HS2.

Business Development Managers in Bechtel are responsible for working within our global matrix structure to gain buy-in to pursue key prospects and leverage required capabilities. This role will be required to work in coordination with Bechtel’s global rail sector team and will draw on existing capabilities within the UK & Ireland region, including our proposal team.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Developing the UK & Ireland Rail business, setting clear objectives against which progress can be measured;
  • Owning the UK & Ireland rail strategy and delivering against the business plan;
  • Developing Bechtel’s UK Rail proposition, drawing on our global offering and track record, responding to challenges in the market such as changing competition and the need for decarbonisation;
  • Owning the development of key prospects and acting as champion internally to secure support and draw on Bechtel’s global capabilities and resources;
  • Developing relevant networks across the entire sector, identifying and nurturing relationships with key decision makers and influencers;
  • Identifying and engaging with potential business partners to secure and develop innovative approaches and individual propositions to address customer and market challenges;
  • Building Bechtel’s position through broader marketing activity, thought leadership and conference speaking/ attendance;
  • Leading on development of proposals and pitches for target prospects,
  • Development of commercial strategy and pricing for individual prospects
  • Negotiating and closing opportunities

Skills and Qualifications

You’ll have strong experience working as a BD leader and a proven track record in developing new client relationships, winning work and closing deals.  You will also have a good understanding of the UK rail market and possess mature relationships within the sector. Specifically, you will have:

  • A demonstrable track record as a sales leader, overseeing significant client engagements, developing and delivering a business plan and securing internal support across the immediate and wider business
  • Ability to sell Bechtel’s value proposition, execution approach and commercial offering to customers based on a deep understanding of rail sector operating requirements and major project delivery
  • Ability to develop new propositions and to work with customers to shape potential prospects, including the ability to develop creative solutions and “connect dots” through disparate information
  • Ability to listen and to understand customer challenges, supporting their early stage thinking as they plan procurements and applying a collaborative approach to customer relationships
  • Skill in oral and written communication with demonstrated ability in making presentations to customers and management and the ability to create effective, tailored pitches to market Bechtel to potential customers and communicate our proposition.
  • The ability to champion deals both internally and externally with sufficient commercial and contractual/legal knowledge to explore options and solutions with both. This will include the ability to be articulate and concise in describing the deal and associated risk and benefits.
  • Knowledge of preparation of win plans, pre-positioning, targeting, pursuit and capture of strategic prospects.
  • Experience in management, supervision, and personnel administration functions, including selection and training of personnel.
