Work Location: Based in UK (with ability to travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as required)

 

 

Saudi Arabian Bechtel Company will provide project management consultancy services (including technical, commercial and construction management) for the development of certain defined aspects of the NEOM Infrastructure in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. NEOM is a planned cross-border city in the Tabuk Province of north-western Saudi Arabia. The site is near the Red Sea and the borders of Egypt, Israel, and Jordan. It will cover a total area of 26,500 km2 (10,200 sq mi) and will extend 460 km along the coast of the Red Sea. NEOM will include towns and cities, ports and enterprise zones, research centres, sports and entertainment venues, and tourist destinations, and will eventually be the home and workplace to more than a million residents from around the world.. As a hub for innovation, entrepreneurs, business leaders and companies will come to research, incubate and commercialize new technologies and enterprises in ground-breaking ways. NEOM’s vision of “Building the land of future, in harmony with nature to create a better place to live & flourish” includes environmental and sustainability goals: Reversing Climate Change, Extracting Resources Wisely, Preventing Environmental Pollution, Supporting Social Cohesion, Building for Sustainability, and Demonstrating Circular Economy.

 

 

Job Summary

The Senior Decarbonization Lead is an important member of the project’s Key Materials Transformation Program, which is tasked with minimizing the impacts and carbon footprint of materials on NEOM infrastructure projects. The Senior Decarbonization Lead will assist in developing and implementing a strategy to accomplish these goals relative to project-wide material selection. This role is in support of the NEOM Design and Construction Innovations team and NEOM EPM Sustainability Manager on an as needed basis by providing expert input into material selection, implementation strategies, and providing expert review capability to the team.

 

 

 

Roles/Responsibilities

  • Engage with the NEOM project team and its design partners to determine opportunities to decarbonize materials selection whilst complying with requirements, standards, and needs.
  • Provide support to the KMTP team in engagement with the materials supply chain to assess regional and local practices as well as material availability, including opportunities for the use of recycled materials.
  • Identify and assess opportunities to reduce the expected carbon footprint of NEOM materials through market knowledge and innovation.
  • Support the development of business cases as needed for selection of low carbon materials on the NEOM project in partnership with the NEOM team. 
  • Assist the NEOM project team in the development of a strategy for implementing innovative low carbon materials.
  • Provide technical guidance to assigned team members, including consultants, in the identification and selection of low carbon materials and technologies.
  • Champion the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction on the project.

 

 

Qualifications/Experience

 

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science or equivalent from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 10 years progressive experience in sustainable design and materials selection
  • Working knowledge of international standards and codes relating to materials.
  • Familiarity with the latest low carbon material innovations and industry trends, the use of recycled materials and design/construction innovations
  • Experience in developing carbon footprints of materials, processes, and organizations
  • Strong English language communication and report writing skills.
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of software.

  • Industry or academic experience and be looking to broaden their planning and technical skillset within a specific program context.
  • Able to identify and solve problems, ask questions to understand the needs and requirements of the client, and other relevant entities in order to provide planning advice, and feasible technical solutions in a multi-stakeholder context.
  • Able to work within a multi-cultural team and manage challenging multi-cultural relationships across a range of entities.
  •  Ability to collaborate across departments and with subconsultants and other parts of the supply chain in pursuit of common objectives
  • Self-driven and able to plan and execute work without direct supervision from senior management and/or peers.
  • Flexible and adapt to working in a demanding Project Management Organization (PMO) environment, including the need to travel and work remotely if / when required.

 

 

Preferred Technical Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Advanced degree(s) or similar post-graduate education with emphasis in sustainability strongly preferred.
  • Ability to prepare clear strategic planning procedures and user-friendly templates to assist entities in undertaking forward, strategic planning.
  • Knowledge and Contacts of companies producing sustainable materials and technologies
  • Relevant experience in the middle east KSA and a sound understanding of the cultural norms and requirements of the region is desirable.

 

 

The incumbent should have legal rights to work in the UK and have no restrictions on international travel including to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia subject to Covid-19 protocols.
