Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking a senior Civil Engineer to join the Civil Structural Engineering department within the Manufacturing and Technology Business Unit (M&T).

 

Assigned to projects to develop an area from conceptual phase to EPC phase. Plans and conducts independent work within M&T to support all business lines (Semiconductor, Electric Vehicle, Battery, and Data Center) requiring judgment in evaluation, selection, application and adaption of design on a project. Knows applicable industry standards and codes, accepted design practices and quality standards for a global business unit.

 

Typical Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assigned activities and deliverables within an engineering or design discipline on the projects.
  • Applies broad knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices to project engineering in the preparation of designs and deliverables.
  • Prepares civil site development design calculations and drawings, detailed 2-D and 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models and construction drawings.
  • Prepares bulk material quantity takeoffs applicable to the discipline.
  • Makes decisions concerning problems within the discipline on the project.
  • Plans, coordinates or prepares work specifications, technical bid evaluations and award recommendations for subcontracts or material requisitions associated with civil site development.
  • Coordinates engineering efforts in assigned areas between Civil Engineering and other engineering disciplines, construction, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Reviews civil site development deliverables and technical documentation produced by suppliers and subcontractor.
  • Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports or proposals associated with civil site development.
  • Performs or assists in the performance of problem analysis and original design associated with civil site development.
  • Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders associated with civil site development.
  • Represents the discipline on the project and with the client as directed to resolve technical questions.
  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of discipline engineers, specialists, designers and detailers.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
  • Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
  • Supports function initiatives of developing Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.
  • Mentor engineers, designers and drafters by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.
  • Promotes the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

 

Skills and Qualifications

 

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in civil engineering from an accredited university or college (or international equivalent) with significant experience in large scale industrial projects
  • Chartered Engineer in the UK
  • Understanding of industry or regulatory codes and standards and design criteria pertinent to the Civil Engineering discipline such as those developed by AASHTO, ACI, ASTM, Asphalt Institute, PCA etc.
  • Prior experience on executing civil siteworks in medium and/or large EPC projects.
  • General knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort.
  • Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design including appropriate knowledge of 2-D and 3-D CADD, and relevant Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) to perform the work. These include Bentley MicroStation, OpenRoads, CulvertMaster, FlowMaster, CivilStorm, Intergraph Smart3D or equivalent applications currently in use in the industry.
  • Knowledge of global business unit activities and operations including business development, legal, procurement, construction, environmental safety and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.
  • Prior work experience being responsible for the engineering progress and performance reporting within a project earned value management system and trending program.
  • Previous experience preparing estimated quantities, job hour estimates, and schedule planning.
  • Skill in leading the technical work of less experienced designers and/or drafters who share in the design effort.
  • Demonstrated ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work experience and responsibility for the supervision on a medium or major size project in civil group at Bechtel.
  • Experience in coordinating with global execution teams and offices.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel Engineering Department Procedures.
  • Prior experience in planning and executing greenfield or brownfield projects in one or more of the following market segments: Semiconductor, Electric Vehicle, Battery, or Data Center.
