Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking a senior level Lead Plant Design and Piping Engineer to join the PD&P discipline within the M&T GBU on a project for a confidential client in the semiconductor industry. This position will be staffed and located in Bechtel’s London execution office.


The ideal candidate has demonstrated skills in leadership with significant prior supervisory experience required.


Typical Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, directs and participates in the day-to-day Plant Design and Piping engineering activity on large complex projects that require major plant design and piping effort, or may be assigned responsibility for multiple smaller projects within a global business unit.
  • Coordination of Plant Design and Piping activities in multiple execution centres and/or with joint venture partners, ensuring consistency throughout the design.
  • Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of Plant Design and Piping engineering personnel, estimates staffing needs and schedules and assigns work accordingly.
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline jobhour estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
  • Maintains contact with other disciplines to ensure the coordination of the work within the project(s) and compliance with Bechtel/client requirements.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations for the Plant Design and Piping aspects of bid evaluations.
  • Reviews and approves key calculations, design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings and change orders.
  • Coordinates with client representatives to obtain their approval of Plant Design and Piping aspects of the work, including 3D model reviews, and all deliverables submitted for review.
  • Ensures that assigned Plant Design and Piping personnel receive appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.
  • Provides technical/expert support to project teams and ensures safety and technical quality is maintained.
  • Provides input to and owns the engineering elements of a project capital estimate (proposals and execution) quantities and budgets for the discipline.
  • Provides the technical input to meet Estimating and Procurement requirements.
  • Provides technical support to internal and external customers.
  • Provides input to, reviews and influences project schedule.
  • Applies broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project engineering.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
  • Makes decisions independently concerning problems within the discipline on the project.
  • Represents the discipline on the project and with the client to resolve technical questions and as required to coordinate work.
  • Supervises the day-to-day technical work of discipline designers and drafters.
  • Conducts annual performance reviews in accordance with approved procedures and holds career development discussions.
  • When required, recommends personnel actions such as staff additions, terminations, transfers and salary changes.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of applicable industry / regulatory codes and standards, and design and/or layout criteria.
  • Extensive knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Extensive knowledge of precedents in the discipline and of principles and practices of related disciplines.
  • Extensive knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved.
  • Knowledge of systems, calculations, equipment, materials and software and methods of application for Plant Design and Piping discipline.
  • High standard of oral and written communication, and use of MSOffice applications.
  • Knowledge of typical Engineering Department Procedures, Design Guides, appropriate Standard Computer Applications and administrative practices.
  • Knowledge of application, use and coordination of 2-D and 3-D Design (CAD) tools on a project, ideally including MicroStation and Smart3D.


The above is normally acquired through:

  • A recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, from an accredited university, OR
  • A professional license in an appropriate engineering or scientific discipline, from a recognized licensing board such as IMechE, OR
  • Specialized courses in relevant general engineering or science or an appropriate engineering discipline, AND;
  • Broad progressive work experience in design engineering, science or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants, or engineering/construction firms.
