Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Lead CSA Engineer - Structures – to join the Engineering department within the Manufacturing and Technology Business Unit (M&T).

 

Assigned to projects to develop an area from conceptual phase to EPC phase. Plans and conducts independent work within M&T to support all business lines (Semiconductor, Electric Vehicle, Battery, and Data Center) requiring judgment in evaluation, selection, application and adaption of design on a project. Knows applicable industry standards and codes, accepted design practices and quality standards for a global business unit.

 

Typical Responsibilities

  • Serves as lead on assigned project to develop IFC and IFF package of structural deliverables for semiconductor manufacturing facility. Responsible for assigned activities and deliverables within an engineering or design discipline on the projects.
  • Applies broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project engineering in the preparation of designs and deliverables.
  • Prepares layouts, study drawings, detailed 2-D and 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models and construction drawings.
  • Prepares bulk material quantity takeoffs applicable to the discipline.
  • Makes decisions concerning problems within the discipline on the project.
  • Represents the discipline on the project and with the client as directed to resolve technical questions.
  • Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from an Area Project Engineer, Project Engineering Manager, or Chief Engineer.
  • Provides technical guidance to subordinate designers and drafters as assigned.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates and reviews design work within a medium size discipline work group on projects of medium size or assignments in support of global business unit.
  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of discipline engineers, specialists, designers and detailers.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
  • Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
  • Supports function initiatives of developing Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.
  • Coordinates with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work.
  • Reviews and approves key engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries.
  • Coordinates assigned design work with other project groups.
  • Mentor designers and drafters by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.
  • Promotes the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

 

Skills and Qualifications

 

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in structural engineering from an accredited university or college (or international equivalent) with significant experience in large scale industrial projects
  • Chartered Engineer in the UK
  • Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards and design criteria pertinent to the discipline. Knowledge of systems, calculations, equipment, applications of methods, plant layout, materials, and computers for preparation of analyses and development of project deliverables within the discipline. Knowledge and understanding of technical and cost issues related to selection of design features within the discipline.
  • Prior experience on executing structural works in EPC projects with significant module scope of work.
  • General knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials and applications of computers 2-D and 3-D structural analysis, computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided engineering (CAE) to engineering problems.
  • Knowledge of global business unit activities and operations including business development, legal, procurement, construction, environmental safety and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.
  • Previous experience preparing estimated quantities, job hour estimates, and schedule planning.
  • Prior work experience being responsible for the engineering progress and performance reporting within a project earned value management system and trending program.
  • Skill in leading the technical work of less experienced designers and/or drafters who share in the design effort.
  • Demonstrated strong frontline leadership skills and emphasis on continuous improvement and team building and an ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Prior work experience and responsibility for the supervision on a medium or major size project in civil, structural and architectural at Bechtel.
  • Experience in coordinating with global execution teams and offices.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel Engineering Department Procedures.
  • Prior experience in planning and executing greenfield or brownfield projects in one or more of the following market segments: Semiconductor, Electric Vehicle, Battery, or Data Center.
