Job Summary:
- The H&S Manager will play a pivotal role in promoting a proactive safety culture, ensuring that all activities are planned and executed safely within a live operational environment.
- Performs duties on large, relatively complex projects.
- Working within a PMC/Delivery Partner role.
- The ES&H Manager will be responsible for developing new approaches to technical problems encountered and provides technical direction for specific tasks as technical ES&H lead including making assignments to subordinate ES&H personnel.
- Plans and coordinates work requiring independent judgment and extensive supervisory experience in multiple industries in the application of ES&H plans, policies, procedures, methods and systems as well as the formulation of mitigation measures to reduce accidents and potential adverse environmental impacts on projects.
- Typically possesses a technical degree in the sciences or engineering from an accredited university or college and broad, progressive work experience in one or more of the ES&H areas.
- Experience in the aviation sector is critical to the role.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develops, integrates and implements all aspects of the ES&H Management System, supporting the delivery of project-related, processes, plans, procedures, systems, methods and policies critical to the success of ES&H, as well as the formulation of mitigation measures to reduce accidents and potential adverse environmental impacts.
- Ensures that complex requirements are properly interpreted by evaluating and applying appropriate ES&H principles and formulating scopes of work, plans, and methodologies suitable for achieving and maintaining compliance with ES&H requirements applicable to the assigned project from both a client and a Bechtel perspective.
- Provides technical assistance and supervisory direction to other environmental, safety and/or health project personnel through managing resources and sharing best in class ES&H initiatives.
- Provides technical support to Client directed feasibility studies, site assessment studies, and project risk assessments and Informs project (ie Client and supply chain) teams of ES&H requirements and ensures they are incorporated into processes and procedures by Contracts & Procurement, Engineering, and Construction personnel.
- Stops work in dangerous situations or conditions having imminent adverse ES&H impact. Stipulates acceptable work practices that are to be implemented before the work can be resumed.
- Supervises and conducts project accident investigations; documents factors contributing to an incident and prepares required reports.
- Coordinates inspection tours of regulatory compliance officers who are auditing the project/facility for compliance with government ES&H requirements.
- Accompanies the compliance officer(s) during the audit; ensures that all inspection reports are prepared and retained for legal defense should litigation result.
- May be required to obtain certification of the Client’s programmes to benchmark standards (eg OHSAS 18001 or ISO 14001 or equivalents)
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience managing ES&H Delivery on complex infrastructure projects, including creating procedures and processes based on the principles of OHSAS 45001 and ISO 14001.
- Strong understanding of ES&H regulations, including construction environmental issues, industry standards for compliance and best management practices for ES&H.
- Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to create safe project environments.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Previous Bechtel experience
- Experience in major UK airport or transport infrastructure projects, particularly within live operational environments.
- Knowledge of Airport operations, governance processes, and stakeholder landscape.
- Experience in implementing ES&H Training Programs.
