Role Summary

Responsible for implementing the Decarbonization strategy for the Infrastructure global business unit and supporting the corporate team on decarbonization initiatives and net zero targets. Supports our customers in carbon footprint analysis and actions and innovations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Collaborates closely with other department and functional leads (e.g., engineering, procurement, construction, ES&H, project controls)  to develop awareness, capability and deploy appropriate tools for evaluating and implementing decarbonization on options on existing projects and future prospects in support of our Net Zero by 2050 ambition.

 

 

Job Dimensions

A. Supervision Received

  • Receives technical and administrative supervision from the GBU Manager of Sustainability, but may also have requests from the Manager of Business Development or Sector Managers.

B. Supervision Exercised

  • Provide technical oversight and direction to sustainability project assigned personnel in the areas of carbon management (and any specialty subcontractors)
  • Provide oversight and assign tasks to sustainability graduates and apprentices

C. Contacts

  • Maintains relationships with M&BD and other functional groups (e.g., engineering, construction, procurement, project controls) to help identify and coordinate integration of decarbonization tools and guidance, as part of generic work processes but also in project-specific carbon management and reduction requirements.
  • In coordination with M&BD and Sectors, establish and maintain contact with customer representatives to exchange information on their decarbonization and net zero goals, which may involve travel.
  • Maintains contact with Corporate and other GBU Sustainability personnel to solicit assistance and to keep them informed of changing requirements.
  • Maintains contact, as appropriate, with relevant government agencies and industry associations and collaboratives to obtain current information on new regulations, program initiatives, and technical requirements and standards for Net Zero/Decarbonization goals.
  • Develop and maintain contact with project personnel to support and collect information on their prospective and ongoing project decarbonization efforts, including the potential to travel to project sites to support development of carbon strategies or give presentations or advice.

 

 

Roles/Responsibilities

  • Foster implementation of the GBU decarbonization strategy, defining and updating targets and actions as necessary, in alignment with the sustainability management system and GBU strategic goals.
  • Implements the Carbon Footprint Action Plan by leading GBU greenhouse emissions (Scope 1, 2 & 3) reporting, including data compilation, verification and assurance - for internal performance monitoring, and voluntary or required external disclosures.
  • Identify key stakeholder entities on the topic with which to engage in support of knowledge acquisition, marketing efforts and thought leadership
  • Work with M&BD and Sector managers to understand their strategies and prospects and target customers’ decarbonization and climate change -related goals and expectations to support BD efforts in creating new opportunities to use sustainability as a differentiator where possible and ensuring we meet or exceed client expectations
  • Conduct workshops with sector leads and proposal teams to identify best decarbonization opportunities to integrate into early project execution planning
  • Supports customer decarbonization efforts by proposing technical tools and resources, including methodologies, software and resources for calculating greenhouse gas footprint from projects and/or activities, embodied carbon, etc. as required – as well as identifying top priority options for reducing emissions including innovative technologies and materials.
  • Provides assistance to project management teams in identifying and complying with decarbonization requirements and customer goals.
  • Coordinates with other functional leads (e.g., engineering, construction, procurement, project controls) to provide technical means & methods, assistance and develop tools to enable evaluation and quantification of decarbonization options and efforts.
  • Works with Corporate and GBU innovation and sustainability teams to advise on overall goals and metrics, and ways to track success and develop case studies, thought leadership opportunities, etc. to enhance our ability to deliver options and build a reputation of competency in decarbonization.
  • Consider climate risk and resilience strategies and options to offer to clients.

 

 

Skills & Experience

  • Advanced knowledge and experience working in the sustainability/climate change/carbon management field.
  • University degree in appropriate field (e.g. sciences, engineering or economics).
  • Advanced knowledge of climate change and related issues, in particular decarbonization strategies and goals and experience in implementing at least one such program previously.  
  • Previous experience developing and implementing climate change/decarbonization strategies.
  • Familiarity with the latest global treaties and agreements, and major entity (cities, industry leaders, etc.) goals regarding climate change, decarbonization, net zero and have industry contacts working in the field. Ability to translate these goals into strategies to contribute and opportunities for Bechtel.
  • Some knowledge of engineering, procurement and construction systems, methods, and work processes as well as project planning, and cost estimating/evaluation techniques (e.g. marginal abatement costs).
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances and situations. Ability to make presentations to senior management, as well as influence without authority.
  • Skilled in both oral and written communication, and in collaboration with proven examples.
