Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking an Expediter for the Mining & Metals team, based in Peru. The position will be responsible for performs expediting activities on a project, in a support office, or at a Jobsite in accordance with Corporate Procurement, global business unit management, and Procurement policies, procedures, and guidelines are followed in accordance with Project Procurement Procedure and/or IWPP. Ensures the timely delivery of materials and equipment to meet project needs and Works closely with the Project and Area Expeditors to ensure projects are started properly and are correctly maintained to completion. May at times be responsible for supervision, direction and monitoring of Expediting Specialists. Provides assistance to the Expediting Supervisor for the input and assessment of project job-hour and monetary budgets.



The Expediter is principally responsible for:

  • Participates in the planning, staffing, and budgeting of project and area expediting operations. Monitors expenditure of project and area expediting job-hours and costs to ensure operations are within budget.

  • Represents Expediting at project team meetings

  • Distributes workload to assigned project expediters according to the experience and ability of the expediter, the degree of complexity of the work and the urgency of the need for action

  • Participates in pre-and post-award meetings to review and discuss schedules and potential problem areas that may impact required shipment dates.

  • Provides guidance and direction in identifying and resolving manufacturing and delivery problems with suppliers. Negotiates with supplier management to identify and resolve problems in supplier operations that affect their ability to meet scheduled delivery dates. 

  • Reports supplier performance on expediting matters to the global business unit Manager of Procurement, the Project Procurement Manager and Corporate Manager of Procurement Functions.

  • As assigned, undertakes the primary expediting role for major purchases to include functions that may normally be performed by both project and area expediting personnel. The assignment may involve direct follow-up with sub-suppliers and authority to make appropriate sub-assignments, with the direction of Area Expediters concerned.

  • Assigns project Expediting personnel as needed to meet project requirements. Monitors current and projected workload to ensure proper build-up and reduction of staffing to satisfy anticipated requirements.

  • Monitors, controls and evaluates the activities and performance of Area Expediters through personal observation at supplier facilities and review of reports and correspondence.

  • Represents and participates in the project team meeting and provides updates by preparing expediting forecasts based on the projected scope and schedule of the project.

  • Reviews area expediting assignments prepared by project expediters and area expediting reports prepared by area expediting personnel for content, completeness and appropriateness.

  • Contacts suppliers to obtain the timely submission of engineering data, and to follow-up on material acquisition, production progress and shipment.

  • Through contacts with suppliers, maintains awareness of current material availability and advises Procurement Management accordingly.

  • Evaluates production schedules and progress reports from suppliers to determine if their programs and work progress meet job-site requirements.

  • Compiles data needed to prepare the critical items reports or other supplementary reports as required. Coordinates the accumulation of data from project expediters and issues reports for the expediting group.

  • Coordinates with planning and scheduling, field material coordinators or Jobsite project expediters and construction to establish priorities, sequences, and required delivery dates and instructs suppliers accordingly.

  • Expedites Bechtel engineering for the timely review, approval, and return of engineering data submitted by suppliers.

  • Reviews material receiving reports against shipping documents to verify that material has been received at Jobsite. Assists in tracing missing material.

  • Maintains a working file of expediting related documents and a memorandum of conversations to record expediting activities. Maintains a system to initiate follow-up actions at appropriate times. Provides information for area expediting assignments for prime and suborders, as necessary.

  • Recommends supplier warnings and advisories for approval and issue by the global business unit or Corporate Procurement informing company-wide Procurement personnel about supplier(s) performance that has adversely affected Bechtel projects.

  • Directs identification of suppliers who have difficulty or appear incapable of meeting specified requirements. Formulates action in resolving suppliers’ delivery problems or provides support to actions taken by Corporate Supplier Quality and Expediting. Keeps the global business unit Manager of Procurement and the Corporate Manager of Procurement Functions, Expediting, aware of supplier performance issues.

  • Prepares management reports on the status and effectiveness of expediting activities and ensures that the projects have current and timely updated DSCS Expediting Tracking Application (ETA) and Supplier Performance Database.

  • Maintains continuing contact with the office project expediting staff to exchange information about jobsite requirements and current order status.

  • Attends construction coordination meetings, coordinates with construction, planning and scheduling, Jobsite engineers, and other field procurement staff to ensure that field material requirements receive timely attention and follow-up action.


Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

The Expediter shall be knowledgeable and/or experienced in:

  • Associate bachelor’s degree or related technical training. Minimum of 6 years of related experience.

Additional Qualifications

  • Proficient in techniques of expediting delivery of materials and equipment.

  • Working familiarity with engineering, planning and scheduling, construction, and procurement practices and an understanding of manufacturing processes and procedures.

  • Proficient in interpreting schedules to ensure that realistic milestones are established, that required activities occur on time, and that interface between activities is maintained.

  • Proficient with Digital Supply Chain System (DSCS) and Supplier Performance Database data input. Skilled in the use of the Expediting Tracking Application (ETA) expediting module, and knowledge of other procurement modules

  • Knowledge of major suppliers of equipment and materials used on projects.

  • Proficient in policy planning, budgeting, personnel selection and development, performance evaluation, and counseling. Demonstrates a high degree of skill in supervising the activities of Expediting personnel.

  • Possesses multi-project experience, varying in complexity and scope, in developing and managing of job-hour and monetary budgets.

  • Good working knowledge of all Procurement processes and procedures that affect Expediting operations.

  • Experience performing shop expediting visits Skilled in metric development and reporting.
