Project Overview:

The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team have signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas fired power generation facilities in the U.S. 

The Tallgrass CCGT project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress early-stage development, that would lead to the start of full EPC delivery next year. 

The candidate will act as the Lead Surveyor (Siteworks) on the upcoming Tallgrass CCGT Project. The candidate may start in the home office in Reston, Houston or Cheyenne, Tallgrass, as single status, to support preconstruction planning, ahead of project mobilization to the field when the candidate will locate on a long-term assignment to Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position is contingent upon project award. 

Job Summary:

The Lead Surveyor (Siteworks) provides support to the construction team, reporting directly to the Area Field Engineer (Siteworks). They will supervise and support surveying activities relating to the siteworks, liaising with Field Engineering. They will use design drawings, model and specifications to determine associated commodity locations. They will work with Field Engineering to support field verification of materials as appropriate and needed. They will provide technical support to Field Engineering and Superintendents in a wide range of situations and configurations. #LI-TH1 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Leads the survey team’s implementation of the project safety, quality, and environmental programs.  
  • Produces the survey strategy and procedure document, which details the requirements for survey equipment, survey content, competence requirements and assessments, and survey accuracy, checking, validation, acceptance, and archiving.  
  • Establishes and verifies the project’s survey control network.  
  • Leads the oversight of survey works by direct hire surveyors in a given area or areas, coordinates all Survey activities, and manages Survey Subcontract and resources if applicable.  
  • Supervises sub-contracted survey crews, including verification of survey crews’ control points and work.  
  • Provides technical support as related to survey to Field Engineering and Superintendents in a wide range of situation and configurations.  
  • Supervises daily data downloading and processing.  
  • Corp Laser Scanning & Metrology Mgr. 
  • Produces survey’s scanning and metrology strategy and procedure document, which details the requirements for equipment, content, competence requirements and assessments, and accuracy, checking, validation, acceptance, and archiving.  
  • Assists the Corporate Survey Manager with competency evaluations and assignments of qualified scanning and metrology survey personnel 
  • Supervises the establishment and verification the Dimensional Control (DC) as required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Multi-Disciplined Field Engineering Survey experience with earthwork, excavation, concrete, structural steel, mechanical, and piping, etc. installation layout and verification. 
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience. 
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Incidents” safety program. 
  • Knowledge of Bechtel quality standards. Must have a solid record of successful project completion with little to zero rework. 
  • Knowledge of construction survey principles. 
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to industrial surveying field & office activities. 
  • Working knowledge of Bechtel construction procedures. 
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe work ethic and work environment at all times. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment, able to formulate a working relationship with survey team members, other departments, contractors and survey functional management. 
  • Displays effective communications skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans in a clear and concise manner. 
  • Excellent problem-solving ability.·       
  • Demonstrated experience with Robotic Total Stations, Digital Levels and GNSS survey systems. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Survey CAD software, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volumes computations. 
  • Experience working on multiple work fronts. 
  • Work under time constraints and must be adaptable to changing conditions. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision. 
  • Intermediate level use of Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Experience as Pilot of UAV (Drones). 
  • Familiarity with heavy equipment Machine Control technology.
