Project Overview:
Pluto Train 2 is the expansion of a second LNG train at the existing Pluto LNG onshore facility near Karratha in Western Australia run by Woodside Energy. Pluto Train 2 will process Scarborough gas and have an LNG capacity of ~5 million tonnes per annum. As part of the construction of Pluto Train 2, additional domestic gas infrastructure will be installed to increase capacity to ~225 Terajoules per day. Woodside Energy has selected Bechtel to deliver the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning scope of work for Pluto Train 2. Woodside Energy is Australia's leading natural gas producer, and Bechtel is excited to be working with this key customer to help meet the increasing global demand for LNG as a transitional energy source.
Job Summary:
In this role, you will lead, implement, and maintain global construction field welding programs and provide specialized welding engineering support. You will manage, inspect, and monitor the welding test lab, the rod room, the weld heat treatment program, and the laboratory quality plan. Your technical advice will help ensure defects, behaviors, and other issues are rectified prior to final inspection. The Field Welding Engineer is responsible for the supporting the Lead Field Welding Engineer in implementing and maintaining the site welding program. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Responsibilities:
Field Welding Engineer
- Implements and maintains Bechtel Field Welding program, may also be assigned as Lead Field Welding Engineer on large projects
- Provides specialized welding engineering support for construction to ensure construction meets all code, client/engineering specifications and Bechtel procedures and standards.
- Assists in the management of the pre- and post-weld heat treatment program.
- Assists in the management of the rod room and rod room attendant to ensure all weld filler materials are controlled so to meet Bechtel, Code, and Client requirements.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bechtel Certifications & Designations - Must have Bechtel Level II VT and RT Certifications – Advanced
- Qualifications, training, and experience that meet the requirements of AS/NZS standards – must have one of the following - IS diploma / Weld Australia (WTIA cert) / NZ IW cert / WS Cert AS1796 No.10, other approved qualification – Advanced
- Advanced knowledge on applicable codes and standards – ASME B31.3 and AS 2885.
- Office Automation Skills – Microsoft Word - Intermediate
- Microsoft Excel – Intermediate
- Piping Skills - Piping Design Drawings/Specifications / TEAMWorks/WITS – Intermediate/Advanced
- Technical / Practical Welding Knowledge - SMAW / GTAW / GMAW / FCAW – Advanced
- Preheat / Post Weld Heat Treatment - Working Knowledge of equipment and consumable – Intermediate
- Bechtel Certifications & Designations - Must have Bechtel Level II VT & RT Certifications
- Able to work night shift and day shift when the business need arises (Note – this role is primarily assigned to night shift)
- Able to manage and support welding activities at night shift independently.
- Worked 8 years plus in Energy or Oil & Gas construction projects.

Additional Information
This position has responsibilities that include exposure to changing environmental, construction, and operational conditions, which may include: extensive walking in and around an active construction and/or operations site, climbing ladders, working at heights from work platforms including scaffolding, and mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), use of personal fall arrest equipment, walking and working on uneven surfaces, working in constricted and/or confined spaces, variable work shifts (e.g., day, night, weekends, 1st, 2nd, 3rd shift, etc.), and work in inclement weather. Some lifting may be required. Candidate must be able to use standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e. respirator, harness, life vest, hearing protection, etc.).
The Pluto Train 2 Project is a Major Hazard Facility meaning this is a non-smoking site and no tobacco products – i.e. cigarettes, vapes, lighters, tobacco - are permitted to be brought to the site.
