Project Overview:
The Project includes the design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of 3 new bucket-wheel reclaimers including associated structural, mechanical, electrical and communications services. The Project also includes the design and construction of associated off-board scope including bulk earthworks, civil infrastructure, structural works and electrical upgrades to support the functionally safe operation of the new reclaimers.
Job Summary:
The CSU Specialist – Pre-commissioning Control Systems provides technical leadership and execution oversight for control systems pre‑commissioning activities on rail mounted machine iron‑ore assets. The role is accountable for safe delivery, technical assurance, and readiness of PLC, DCS, SCADA, and safety systems across brownfield and greenfield scopes, supporting commissioning, startup, and operational handover.
Major Responsibilities:
- Lead and execute control systems pre‑commissioning activities including I/O checks, loop checks, panel inspections, and functional testing in accordance with approved CSU procedures and Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) site standards.
- Provide technical leadership to CSU technicians and engineers, setting work priorities and ensuring consistent execution quality.
- Plan, review, and approve control systems pre‑commissioning procedures, test packs, and system work packages.
- Lead system walkdowns across processing plant, materials handling, stockyards, rail, utilities, and infrastructure areas to confirm readiness for commissioning.
- Act as the primary CSU control systems interface with Construction, E&I, Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams.
- Lead resolution of brownfield integration issues, defects, and punch items impacting control system operability or schedule.
- Coordinate and lead vendor and OEM testing activities for PLCs, DCS, SCADA, drives, MCC interfaces, and safety systems.
- Support and oversee energisation, isolation, LOTO, and handover activities in compliance with RTIO permit‑to‑work and isolation standards.
- Provide technical decision‑making and troubleshooting for complex control system issues.
- Ensure accurate CSU documentation, redlines, test records, and turnover dossiers are completed to RTIO operational requirements.
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership and ensure CSU activities are executed in compliance with RTIO ES&H standards.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Trade or technical qualification in Electrical, Instrumentation, or Control Systems, or equivalent industry experience.
- Senior CSU / Commissioning experience on RTIO or equivalent Tier‑1 mining projects strongly preferred.
- RTIO site authorisations, LOTO competency, HV awareness, and relevant inductions as required.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Extensive experience delivering control systems pre‑commissioning and commissioning on iron‑ore processing plants or Tier‑1 heavy industrial projects.
- Strong hands‑on knowledge of PLC, DCS, SCADA, industrial networks, and functional safety systems used in materials handling and process plant environments.
- Proven leadership experience guiding CSU teams in brownfield, live‑plant execution environments.
- Strong understanding of operational handover requirements and readiness expectations for RTIO assets.
- High‑level ability to interpret P&IDs, control philosophies, I/O schedules, cause & effect matrices, and vendor documentation.
- Confident working in FIFO, high‑tempo Pilbara project environments.
