Bechtel will be working alongside ERA and major stakeholder Rio Tinto to restore the land to the status of its surrounding World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park. A collaborative project, this project will be developed in consultation with the Mirarr Traditional Owners and will benefit the Jabiru community.

Located 8 km east of Jabiru and 260 km south-east of Darwin, the Ranger Project will lead the way in the fast-growing area of mining closures.

Position Summary:

The Project Field Engineer is responsible for the organization and direction of construction engineering personnel and activities relating to construction engineering, subcontracts, and engineering liaison to the Engineering Home Office. Interprets design drawings and specifications. 

  • Supervises field verification of materials. 
  • Provides technical direction to construction engineers and superintendents in a wide range of construction engineering and design functions relating to multi-discipline engineering the overall project. 
  • This role oversees the major rehabilitation of a redundant open pit uranium mine from an engineering perspective. It is predominantly a bulk earthworks project but also involves the demolition of an existing decommissioned processing facility and supporting infrastructure on the surface of the mine site. There are also water treatment assets and transferring of various streams of water between pits, ponds, and treatment facilities. It is also anticipated that there will need to be construction of new water treatment and power generation assets. It is a highly regulated mine site and before each portion of works can commence there are regulatory permits that need to be approved which involves extensive plan development, reviews, and submission.    

 Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates with home engineering & construction on constructability and design issues
  • Responsible for quantity take-off, control, reporting and forecasting.
  • Coordinates and monitors the interfacing between the construction automation plan and the project controls program at the jobsite.
  • Reviews and provides input to project controls documents on progress relating to cost and schedule.
  • Ensures the implementation of the project construction procedures. Coordinates any deviations from these procedures.
  • Coordinates with the superintendents and subcontractors to plan construction schedules.
  • Coordinates subcontract activities to ensure materials, equipment and quality comply with design plans and specifications.
  • Plans and recommends procedures to be implemented by superintendents to ensure construction operations are within requirements of engineering design and specifications.
  • Reviews and provides input to the project staffing plan for construction engineers and associated personnel.
  • Maintains an effective relation with other functional departments, client, and stakeholders.
  • Coordinates development and submission of any technical plans required for regulatory permit approvals.  
  • Leads and coordinates onsite surveying including drone surveillance programs.
  • Lead surveillances and quality assurance and audits.
  • Leads and supports commissioning and turnover efforts, including documentation reviews, in field monitoring, generating system punch lists and compiling turnover dossiers.  

 Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Degree from an accredited university in an engineering field with 13+ years of related professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in Bulk Earthworks and Civil works.
  • Highly desirable to have experience in mine site or other large scale rehabilitation efforts.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.
  • Prior experience supervising onsite field engineering teams.
  • Prior experience supervising and administering subcontractors.

 Additional Qualifications:

  •  Technical knowledge of all phases of construction in a multi-discipline position
  • Thorough knowledge of construction activities as they relate to engineering disciplines, cost and scheduling, and contract administration.
  • Knowledge of the use of subcontracts; knowledge of the contractor/subcontractor’s responsibilities contained in subcontract documents.
  • Knowledge of the phases of project scoping, planning, and execution relating to the construction of multi-discipline works.
  • Experience managing both subcontracted and self-performed construction.
  • Thorough knowledge of the content and implementation of Quality Policies and programs.
  • Knowledge of the use of subcontracts, and the contractor and subcontractor’s responsibilities contained in subcontract documents.
