Project Overview:

.The Infrastructure Global Business Unit (GBU) and the Groundworks & Marine (G&M) Business Line is executing site civil and marine scopes of work alongside our Energy GBU on various LNG projects along the Gulf Coast and beyond.

The candidate will act as the Temporary Works & Rigging Engineer (Marine) supporting these projects.

The candidate will be based at Bechtel Equipment Operations, Inc (BEO).  which provides operational and technical support to Bechtel projects. BEO is located in Sugar Land, TX. The candidate will be expected to support site operations and require extensive job site visits, primarily along the Gulf Coast.

Job Summary:

The Temporary Works & Rigging Engineer (Marine) will work alongside and support the Project teams to develop, design, manufacture, install and use all temporary works & rigging engineering requirements to successfully deliver the marine scope of works.

The candidate will need to work independently, with minimal supervision and have a good understanding of problem solving within the marine structures & rigging discipline. He/she should be familiar with multi-discipline and multi-project working environments. His/her duties will include developing preliminary/detail drawings and performing structural designs / calculations / analysis for all marine temporary works & rigging requirements.  #LI-TH1 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for all Marine Temporary Works & Rigging requirements. (This may include Engineering requirements for Rigging, Pile Templates, Barge Stability / Ballasting, Sheet Pile/King Pile bulkheads, and any other Engineering requirements for the transportation and installation of Marine works and equipment).
  • Maintain contact and collaborate with the different Project Teams to understand and schedule Marine Temporary Works & Rigging Engineering requirements.
  • Develop engineered temporary works designs and specifications that meet the needs of the Project Teams. Stamp and issue these designs at IFC.
  • Provide technical input and support for the development of lift plans for marine piling operations, material offloading activities, and barge crane operations.
  • Works closely with area superintendent and field engineering regarding constructability, construction equipment requirements (including crane sizes and locations), ground preparations (including crane pads and haul routes), crane layout, scheduling and sequencing.
  • Respond to any technical queries from construction and attend any coordination meetings.
  • Monitor compliance of rigging & marine operations and engineered designs.
  • Review any non-conformance items against the original design, provide a disposition and approve the non-conformance report.
  • Support upcoming estimates by determining crane sizes and quantities based on schedule needs and select appropriate piling methodologies and assist in the preparation of the Construction Equipment Schedule (CES) and budgets.
  • Work closely with safety personnel regarding rigging and marine related safety procedures and requirements
  • Define scope of work for subcontract packages and assess technical proposals of subcontractor heavy haul and heavy lift bid packages for piling and marine work rigging operations. Review subcontractor lift plans.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • PE Registration required, preferably in TX.
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in naval architecture / marine engineering from an accredited university or college and 12-13 years of relevant experience or in lieu of a degree, 24-25 years of relevant work experience.
  • Engineering experience in marine structural design, such as ports, terminals, wharfs, piers, bulkheads, breakwaters, berthing/mooring systems, and foundations.
  • Experience in engineering for the use of lifting equipment, heavy lift cranes and specialized cranes, alternative heavy lifting systems, tailing techniques and equipment, rigging equipment, and transport/transfer of equipment, marine works, soil mechanics, load distribution systems, and structural design including ASME B30.20 BTH-1.
  • Broad based theoretical knowledge in piling, lifting/hauling equipment and techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable codes and legislation: the candidate is required to be fully knowledgeable and familiar with the legislation and code applying to lifting devices, rigging, heavy haul transport and marine operations.
  • Advance understanding of barge crane operations, marine offloading facility construction, piling equipment types and pile installation techniques.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficient with commercial software such as GTSTRUDL, STAAD Pro, ANSYS, SACS, FB-Pier, L-Pile, MathCAD, OPTIMOOR, or similar programs
  • Strong analytical skills in advanced structural and geotechnical design for marine/offshore structures and foundations.
  • Familiarity with international codes and standards related to marine and coastal design
  • Ability to travel to and from various project sites
  • Construction experience with a marine construction contractor is preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of the application and requirements of the Project Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) Handbook and the Bechtel Core Processes as they relate to area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Accidents” safety program.
