  1. Responsible for assigned activities within an engineering or design discipline in a global business unit.
  2. Applies broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project in the preparation of designs and deliverables.  Makes decisions concerning challenges within the discipline on the project. 
  3. Represents the discipline on the project and with the client, to resolve technical issues as directed.
  4. Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from a Project Engineer, Engineering Manager, senior Supervising Designer, or Chief Engineer.
  5. Provides technical guidance to subordinate designers as assigned.
  6. Plans, develops, coordinates and reviews design work within a medium-size discipline work group on projects of medium size or assignments in support of global business unit.
  7. Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of discipline engineers, scientists, specialists, designers, and drafters.
  8. Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to discipline Engineering Group Supervisor.
  9. Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).
  10. Understands discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
  11. Assists with the development of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, design highlights, piping details, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.
  12. Coordinates with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work.
  13. Reviews and approves key engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries.
  14. Coordinates assigned design work with other project groups.
  15. Mentor’s designers by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.
  16. Promotes the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

Qualifications and Skills:

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of systems, equipment, applications of design methods, materials, and computers for preparation of analyses and development of project design deliverables within the disciplline.
  2. 10+ years of strong layout and design experience with focus on plot plan optimization and value engineering designs including vessel orientations, economical pipe routing/support and human factor engineering.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of technical and cost issues related to selection of design features within the discipline.
  4. Good working knowledge of application of 2-D and 3-D CAD (S3D) tools in development of conceptual designs and production design deliverables of some complexity.
  5. Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  6. Knowledge of precedents in the discipline and of principles and practices of related disciplines.
  7. Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved.
  8. Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards, and design and/or layout criteria.
  9. Good knowledge of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.
  10. The above is normally acquired through:
    1. A recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, from an accredited college or university, OR
    2. A professional license in an appropriate engineering or scientific discipline, from a recognized licensing board, OR
    3. Specialized courses in relevant general design or an appropriate engineering discipline, AND
    4. Broad progressive work experience (15+ years) in design or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants, or engineering/construction firms.
