Project Overview:

Bechtel is performing Project Management and Technical Services leading up to a Final Investment Decision for 750km natural gas pipeline in British Columbia, Canada. The pipeline will traverse remote mountainous terrain, sensitive environments, and deep marine channels. The project includes compression, metering, and other facilities and communications systems.

Job Summary:

​​​​​Senior Pipeline Designer/Mapper responsible for assigned activities within the Pipeline discipline in the Energy global business unit.  Applies broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project engineering in the preparation of designs and deliverables.  Makes decisions concerning problems within the discipline on the project.  Represents the discipline on the project and with the client as directed to resolve technical questions.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs pipeline design, including, but not limited to alignment sheet, route map, station approach, HDD drawing, site specific and detail drawing development, support pipeline related calculations, and flow assurance with minimal guidance from others. Position requires a working knowledge of Bluesky products for alignment sheet generation.
  • Sound knowledge of design and drafting techniques, engineering drawings, graphic arts, reading of drawings, and reproduction methods used by the discipline
  • Utilize GIS tools to manage data, perform design, and issue deliverables. The position requires proficiency with the AutoCad suite of tools and good working knowledge of ESRI-based GIS products.
  • Applies broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of designs and deliverables. Makes decisions concerning problems on the project
  • General knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort
  • Ensures that design is carried out in accordance with Bechtel’s approved design standards, work processes and procedures, project specific procedures, and contractual requirements to accomplish quality design
  • Ensures that pipeline design meets industry best practice and complies with pertinent pipeline codes and standards, governing regulations, and industry practices
  • Reviews and checks calculations, drawings and design documents prepared by assigned designers / mappers for quality, accuracy, neatness, functionality and satisfactory completion
  • Works with designers in other disciplines particularly with PD&P to coordinate overall design and technical requirements
  • Develops work plans, budgets, and schedules for basic designer tasks based on input and direction from supervisor in pipeline discipline
  • Answers questions from client or construction group on design scope within assigned responsibility
  • Direct the technical work of less experienced designers /mappers and provides on-the-job training for designer / mapper within assigned lead responsibility
  • Knowledge of the application of engineering and construction materials related to the pipeline design responsibilities
  • Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from a Project Engineer, Engineering Manager, Supervising Designer, and Chief Engineer

Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10  years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

    •  
  • Specific knowledge but not limited to pipeline layout, centerline, temporary and permanent space determination and design, location class etc. and incorporate them into GIS database
  • Experience with collecting and processing survey data and incorporate into GIS database.
  • Knowledge of systems, equipment, applications of design methods, materials, and computers for preparation of analyses
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical and cost issues related to selection of design features within the discipline
  • Good working knowledge of application of AutoCAD Civil 3D, Blue Sky Skyline and Lightning for Alignment Sheet, Global Mapper, ESRI ArcGIS, Bentley InRoads, and MicroStation for production of design deliverables
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methodsKnowledge of precedents in the discipline and of principles and practices of related disciplinesKnowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved.
