Job Summary:
Bechtel is seeking a Senior Field Geotechnical Engineer to provide on‑site engineering support for deep foundation construction, including drilled shafts and pile foundations, at the Eli Lilly project site. This role is primarily field‑based and supports construction execution through technical oversight, coordination with contractors, and real‑time issue resolution. Additional responsibility to support earthworks and ground improvement activities will also be required.
The position reports to the Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) leadership and works closely with Construction, CSAOM, ES&H, and project management teams. The assignment is expected to be site‑based for an extended duration, with potential transition to another Bechtel project or permanent office thereafter.
Major Responsibilities:
This role will support the piling, earthworks, and other ground improvement operations at the project site. Other responsibilities may include development and implementation of geotechnical investigations, origination and review of geotechnical engineering designs and specifications, engineering calculations and preparation and review of geotechnical studies in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. The work will require tracking scope of work, schedule, and budgets and with coordinating with other technical disciplines in a team environment. Specific tasks will include (but not limited to):
- Provide field engineering support and oversight during drilled shaft and pile foundation construction activities.
- Verify compliance with approved drawings and specifications, including reinforcement cages, pile dimensions, embedment depths, and concreting operations.
- Observe and document concrete placement, including mix verification, slump testing, temperature checks, and test cylinder preparation.
- Review construction records, concrete delivery tickets, and installation logs for quality and specification compliance.
- Support and lead pile and drilled shaft load testing programs, including verification of equipment calibration, observation of testing, and preliminary review of results.
- Identify construction issues or deviations early and coordinate corrective actions with Construction, subcontractors, and home‑office engineering.
- Provide field support to earthworks, compaction, and soil improvement activities as needed to support foundation performance.
- Verify compliance with earthwork specifications, including lift thickness, proof rolling, and testing frequencies.
- Review field test results and coordinate with engineering teams on any required remediation.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering or other related Engineering discipline from an accredited university or college with 8 years of progressive related experience in the field or a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering and minimum 6 years of progressive related experience
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated field experience with drilled shafts and/or pile foundation construction on industrial or infrastructure projects.
- Working knowledge of foundation construction quality control, load testing, and field documentation.
- Familiarity with earthworks and ground improvement as they relate to foundation systems.
- Strong coordination and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a construction environment.
- Proficiency with standard engineering software and Microsoft Office tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent registration.
- Experience supporting large industrial, pharmaceutical, energy, or infrastructure projects.
- Prior involvement in foundation load testing programs or construction support roles.
