Integrated Materials Management is a core competence of Bechtel’s global Supply Chain organization. It plays a crucial role in broader process of Project Management, addressing the unique aspects of capital project execution. Materials Management integrates the Engineering, Supply Chain, and Construction organizations to ensure smooth material flow from planning through execution to project jobsites.

Engineering and constructing unique projects involve an iterative series of design, supply, and construct activities, all under strict schedule requirements. Early engineering design and the specification of equipment and materials, especially in compressed schedules, are often influenced by sourcing principles and material flow model that determine the acquisition strategy, what equipment and materials are required, and the schedules that are achievable to meet Construction’s needs towards work front planning and constructability reporting.

The Integrated Materials Management organization collaborates with Engineering, Supply Chain, Project Controls, and Construction to respond to the dynamic conditions of major capital projects. This collaboration ensures access to critical information on sourcing and supply of materials, facilitating the completion of facility design and enabling Construction to meet installation schedules.

There are two distinct roles within Supply Chain’s Integrated Materials Management discipline - Material Planners and Material Coordinators. Material Planners typically work within the design office coordinating the early project development and planning with Engineering, Supply Chain, Project Controls. Material Coordinators interface with the design office but typically work from the construction site to provide material constructability input to Construction’s work front planning.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will support business lines and project team members regarding the Material Planning and/or Material Coordination for assigned project. Planning involves providing strategy, work process and system expertise during the early project development and execution planning stages. Coordination includes providing process and tools to project teams that communicate material availability, accuracy, and timeliness to the correct location to ensure the required materials to complete the project are available.

Assignment in the Design office is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and will require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership. Assignment at the jobsite is designated full-time office per our global telework policy and the requirements of the jobsite.

Material Planning

  • Implements the Material Management Plan and coordinates the specification, identification, and quantification of materials with Engineering and Construction during the front-end execution activities in the project office.
  • Supports Project Scheduling and Supply Chain in the development of the project schedule.
  • Follows a strict set of guidelines to optimize the materials planning work processes for key material commodities.
  • Determines, with the functional project groups, the best strategy for major fabricated bulk commodities.
  • Ensures consistent material identification methodology and clearly defined responsibilities between project functions and the commodity work processes that allow for an efficient and economical purchase and supply process; permitting accurate status and distribution of materials according to the priority and sequence of construction activities.
  • Assists Engineering in implementing the project’s component numbering approaches, as required by bulk materials, and spares.
  • Identifies any “special” or potentially lengthy requirements that could impact the timely issuance of the key engineering deliverables that drive the materials work process.
  • Identifies, in coordination with Engineering and Expediting, critical design drawings and data required from suppliers that may affect the timely issuance of other design deliverables or are needed by Construction.
  • Verifies that material requisitions clearly identify required pay items and reflect a level of detail in which materials will be shipped and identified for storage and control prior to distribution to Construction for installation.
  • Maintains direct working relationship with Project Controls, Discipline Engineers, Supply Chain, Automation Support and/or Material Coordinators at site to ensure that Construction personnel are provided with materials to support the completion of the construction work.
  • Monitors Engineering and Supply Chain deliverable schedules to ensure they will meet the construction schedule.
  • Monitors materials components aspects of the project Automation Plan related data integrations between the functional groups with respect to assigned discipline/commodity area of responsibility.

Material Coordination

  • Serves as liaison between Project Supply Chain for planning and reporting of undelivered materials, Field Supply Chain for received and stored materials, and Construction personnel for constructability reporting of materials required for work package installation.
  • Coordinates with responsible groups that materials are provided in a timely manner and in sufficient quantity to support the completion of construction work.
  • Implements the planned construction activities and work packaging structure on the project through coordination with Field Engineering, Construction, and/or (Sub)Contractors, and Project Controls.
  • Ensures accurate distribution of materials to Construction and/or Subcontractor installation locations.
  • Implements planned inventory control mechanisms, such as min-max and bag-and-tag and implementation of the Field Supply Chain automation tools to ensure that construction material requirements are achieved.
  • Identifies and reports excess materials for re-incorporation to the project design or process for disposition.
  • Coordinates material availability in support of design revisions, rework, contingency, or work-around plans.
  • Participates in Construction and/or (Sub)Contractor planning meetings to be fully aware of changes in installation plans and priorities.
  • Prepares the site constructability reports to include 30, 60, and 90-day material forecasts and coordinates the constructability look ahead meetings.
  • Utilizes the materials components of the project Automation Plan (used by functional groups) to monitor related data integrations between the functional groups.
