Material/Product Handling Engineer

Role Overview:

Position requires work experience in specifying, selecting, evaluating, and supporting detailed design and engineering of pneumatic handling systems, extruder trains, loss-in-weight feeders, silos and blenders for the Plastics Industry.  The specific technical skills require developing technical specifications and data sheets, performing and reviewing of calculations for mechanical design, ability to prepare system PFD’s and P&ID, prepare budget estimates, conduct feasibility studies for dilute and dense phase pneumatic handling systems, extruders trains, product storage and blending systems, and railcar/ truck loadout systems.

Duties include developing and providing oversight review of the mechanical data sheets, technical specifications, preparing technical documents for material requisitions and/or subcontract, technical bid evaluations and recommendations, reviewing supplier’s drawing and data documentation for compliance with project specification and code requirements, and supervision of shop and field testing of equipment and systems. The position also requires active coordination between and supporting various engineering disciplines, suppliers, clients, estimating, procurement, QA/QC and construction.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Applicant having job experience working in Plastics industry is preferred.
  • Having knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, ASME, commercially available and proprietary system sizing programs and Microsoft Office products is a must.
  • Work experience with E&C Company and/or Manufacturing is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills are required to organize and conduct technical meetings in a professional manner including the recording and administrating of all meeting action items.
    Additional Information
  • Applicant must have BSME or equivalent degree.
  • Experience with field installation / commissioning activities is preferred.
  • PE preferred.


Role specific qualifications


  • 7 to 12 years of experience in Plastics industry.
  • Participate in project model reviews and vendor kickoff meetings to support project schedule and technical design requirements.
  • Able to work with minimal direct supervision of day to day tasks (issue datasheets, material requisitions, bid evaluations) to meet project goals for cost and schedule.



  • 12+ years of experience in Plastics industry.
  • Strong working knowledge of industry codes and standards, as related to the equipment responsible for.
  • Able to provide training for groups within and external to Mechanical Engineering, as required.
  • Participate in model reviews and equipment walkdown at vendor’s shop. Coordinate with other disciplines, vendor and client to resolve comments resulting from model reviews and equipment walkdowns.
  • Able to identify technical hurdles and/or design issues proactively, to address them ahead of project critical path.
  • Able to mentor junior mechanical engineers
