Job Summary:
The Maintenance Shop Superintendent supports overall equipment maintenance operations by overseeing day-to-day shop activities to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant maintenance, repair, and readiness of construction equipment. This role provides direct supervision to maintenance personnel and acts as a key operational leader to maintain continuity, productivity, and alignment with project requirements. The Superintendent works closely with project and field teams to ensure equipment availability and performance supports construction objectives. #LI-TH1
Major Responsibilities:
- Manage daily shop operations, including inspection, maintenance, repair, and servicing of heavy construction equipment.
- Supervise maintenance personnel, assign daily work activities, establish priorities, and coordinate tasks to meet operational and project objectives.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, manufacturer guidelines, and applicable safety and environmental regulations.
- Enforce safety procedures and conduct routine safety meetings to maintain a safe working environment.
- Monitor equipment condition, maintenance schedules, and repair status to ensure maximum uptime and reliability.
- Track and maintain accurate equipment records, service histories, and maintenance documentation using PEMS or fleet systems.
- Coordinate with project site personnel to respond to equipment needs and provide updates on repair status and availability.
- Support identification and resolution of recurring mechanical issues and equipment performance deficiencies.
- Oversee inventory control of parts, tools, and consumables, including requisitioning and tracking materials required for maintenance activities.
- Assist with workforce planning, onboarding, training, and performance management of shop personnel.
- Prepare operational reports, maintenance summaries, and performance metrics for management review.
- Serve as acting maintenance lead in the absence of senior management, ensuring uninterrupted shop operations and decision-making within established guidelines.
- Support time tracking, labor reporting, and cost tracking associated with maintenance activities.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Diesel Technology, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 7–10+ years of experience in heavy construction equipment maintenance.
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory or lead experience in a maintenance or shop environment.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience supervising mechanics, technicians, and support personnel in a shop environment.
- Strong understanding of heavy equipment systems, including diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with project teams regarding equipment needs, status, and priorities.
- Experience conducting safety meetings and enforcing compliance with safety standards.
- Ability to coordinate work activities across multiple teams to meet operational and project goals.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and electronic inventory systems.
- Familiarity with procurement processes and parts requisition systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and reporting platforms.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills in a fast-paced construction environment.
Working Conditions
- Shop-based role with regular interaction with active construction sites.
- May require extended hours, weekend work, or emergency response to support project schedules.
- Exposure to heavy equipment, noise, dust, and outdoor construction environments.
