Project Overview:

The Bechtel Welding and Applied Technology Center is a world-class applied development facility focused on continuous project support along with research and development initiatives focused on construction materials, methods and advanced welding processes. The Testing Laboratory contains a machine shop, mechanical testing equipment, computed tomography radiography, optical microscopy, materials characterization and corrosion testing. Application of this equipment is to provide physical material testing in accordance with ASME, ASTM, API, and other applicable codes and standards.

Job Summary:

The Testing Lab Engineer reports to the Manager of Welding and NDE Services and is responsible for supporting the Quality Management System, operation of the equipment and performing material tests. 
"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and will require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership” #LI-TH1 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Quality Management System for the Testing Laboratory in accordance with ISO 17025.
  • Implementing written procedures and methods for materials characterization and testing.
  • Perform and lead testing and characterization projects
  • Provide written and verbal communication of laboratory analysis.
  • Provide technical assistance to corporate welding team, field projects, and external clients
  • Support the Laboratory Metrology System operations and maintenance
  • Ensure that all laboratory personnel and visiting scientists are educated, trained and aware of the QMS and testing
  • procedures
  • Support the Corporate Welding Team, projects and external clients through mechanical and corrosion testing in
  • accordance with ASTM methods and their applications to ASME, AWS, NACE, API, etc requirements.

Actively pursues industry improvements to testing methods ensuring Bechtel maintains leading edge technology.

Supporting failure analysis and investigations while interacting with on-site project teams

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology with 8+ years in the welding and construction industry / or 12+ years’ experience on industrial construction projects or industrial fabrication environments.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must have a wide knowledge of machining equipment and be proficient in the use thereof.
  • Capable of travel to project sites for technical and operational support of construction machining operations.
  • Experience using field machining equipment and managing field machining operations. 
  • Knowledge of engineering, construction methods, and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction and practical experience, capable of travel to support field execution and implementation
  • Must be knowledgeable in ASME, AWS, ASTM and other applicable industry standards
  • Strong working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
  • Excellent problem-solving ability for custom machining, large-scale testing, and resolving failure analysis
  • Trainer and educator capable of working with clients, contractors, vendors and surveyors.
