Project Overview:

Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States by far – enough to power 1 million electric vehicles per year.

As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team contractors engineering and building the facility. We are also managing procurement of about $1 Billion in goods and services.

Earth work began in 2023 and design and procurement of long-lead equipment is underway.

The project is located in the high desert and wide-open spaces of north-central Nevada about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 3 hours northeast of Reno.

Planned with sustainability and the environment in mind, the facility will use its excess process heat to generate electricity and will recycle process water up to seven times. Once the second phase of the project is complete, Thacker Pass will produce more than 16 times the current U.S. output of lithium.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will conduct field investigations and client interviews to determine work scope and cost estimates for a project’s control systems aspects. You will lead design, development, modification, and evaluation of control systems components and processes. Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure unique and complex requirements of a project’s control systems aspects are met.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard Control Systems engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications​ 
  • Participates in the design, development and modification of mechanical components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs)​ 
  • Coordinates work and collaborates with other engineering disciplines​ 
  • Coordinates Control Systems engineering efforts in assigned areas with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor, contractors, construction and other functional groups​ 
  • Prepares conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals 
  • Provides technical assistance to other Control Systems personnel and interacts with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues and industry codes and standards​ 
  • Provides assistance to project and construction management in identifying and complying with project Control Systems requirements and in addressing issues as they arise during project execution 

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Works under the direction of more senior engineers/EGS and may have more junior level engineers/drafters subordinates.
  • Responsible to produce high level and conceptual drawings and documentation within the discipline in accordance with established conceptual design and scope.
  • Conducts checking as required.
  • Properly interprets and applies codes & standards and customer design requirements, for the preparation of Control Systems design documents, specifications, material requisitions and system descriptions related to design tasks.
  • The Engineer shall champion non-proprietary electronic data interchange and integrate automation technology where ever practical.
  • Must express thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and written.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities with emphasis on continuous improvement and team building, and interpersonal communication skills.
