CSA - Senior Naval Architect (Gurgaon)

Job Description

This role is based out of our office in Gurugram

The Senior Naval Architect reports directly to the Chief Engineer Civil and will work with multiple teams of structural engineers and related disciplines to support Engineering Design of Modular Structures for Bechtel projects around the world. This role may transition to a project specific assignment, reporting to an Engineering Group Supervisor (EGS), Project Engineer

  • Participates in design work for a broad range of engineering disciplines
  • Has working knowledge of transportation methods and design considerations of modular construction including ocean transportation, the principles and practices of related technical areas and of coordinating work with other technical disciplines especially structural engineering and construction
  • Proficient in analysis of modular transport using barge and tug boat, direct on deck, piggy back systems for Pre-assembled rack (PAR), Pre-assembled unit (PAU)
  • Ability to establish module design considerations for ocean transportation such as Met ocean criteria (wave / wind), design accelerations & design deflections
  • Ability to perform integrated vessel / module stress and deflection studies including for barge deck vertical deflection under wave loading and perform local stress checks
  • Experience in coordination with Naval Architect vendors and load in/ load out procedures
  • Experience of using finite element software such as SESAM for hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and strength analyses and intact / damaged stability analysis etc.
  • Experience of using 3D software such as S3D, SPR and support software such as Mathcad, etc. is preferred though not necessary
  • Is fluent in applicable international codes of practice in US, Australia, Europe and Canada governing sea/ land transportation


  1. Primary Responsibilities
  • Ensuring conformance with Contract Requirements relating to Engineering
  • Conforming Bechtel Standard procedures to Project Requirements and ensuring their implementation
  • Supporting the supervising engineer in planning and implementing a program to develop self-perform engineering capabilities and resources

  • Performs most assignments independently with instructions as to the general results expected.



  • Able to support whole life-cycle costings and feasibility assessments
  • Provides engineering support to proposal and subcontract documents
  • Performs work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional methods/ materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  • Plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates self-perform engineering work during all phases of modular projects viz. setup of module design criteria, verification of module design, suitability assessment of vessel/ barge, suitability study of loading dock, design of sea-fastening and grillage
  • Participates in subcontractor supervision and supports module load-in and load-out
  • Maintains an up to date knowledge of current trends and implements this into practices and procedures
  • Exercises both line management and functional direction over assigned Engineers / Designers

Project Specific

  • Performs engineering efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and contractors and between other groups
  • Takes lead technical role over other engineers or project subgroups for completing specific tasks
  • Oversees and/or participates in the process for technical reviews of contractors, shop drawings, product data, material samples, etc.
  • Prepares conceptual/ detailed studies and reports, performs design reviews, participates in value engineering efforts
  • Participates in cost, budget, schedule estimation for proposals. Prepares subcontract documents, participates in vendor selection and approves vendor documentation/ drawing
  • Prepares structural calculations, conceptual sketches, design drawings, technical specifications and participates in cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for forecasts and change orders
  • Reviews and checks work of subordinate engineers


  • Thorough knowledge of discipline engineering techniques, the design of engineered systems, and engineering and design calculations.
  • Understanding of Engineering Department Procedures, relevant Bechtel design guides. Broad knowledge of the application of engineering to plant constructability as applied to construction methods and materials.
  • Understanding of engineering planning and control methods including computerized methods.
  • Understanding of the roles played by other departments on projects including basic construction practices and the economics involved.
  • Understanding of industry or regulatory codes and standards and design criteria pertinent to the transportation/highway industry.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.


  • Minimum 4-year degree from an accredited college program in Civil Engineering/ Naval Architecture/ Ocean Engineering
  • Preference will be given to the candidates with post-graduation in related field
  • Minimum 15 years of overall design engineering experience on EPC projects out of which at least 5 years shall be on projects with significant modularization
  • Preference will be given to the candidates with Professional Engineering License in US/ Canada/ Australia
