CSA-Drainage Specialist - Infrastructure (Gurgaon)

Plans and conducts independent work within a global business unit requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria for design of drainage works associated with multiple infrastructure development projects. Supports project proposal activities, FEED, Engineering and Construction phase of the project.  Devises new approaches to solving problems.


A.  Supervision Received

  • Performs most assignments independently with instructions as to the general results expected.  Receives technical guidance from Engineering Specialists or Supervisors on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed project plans.

B.  Supervision Exercised

  • Provides technical direction and assigns work to subordinate engineers, designers, drafters, technicians and others who assist in performing specific assignments.

C.  Contacts

  • Independently contacts client representatives and project field personnel to gather or give information. Contacts/works with client counterparts and regulatory agency personnel.



  1. Plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates detailed phases of engineering work for a global business unit usually in one project or staff group.  Performs work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  2. Performs work using Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and appropriate 2-D and 3-D computer aided design and computer aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools. 
  3. Plans, coordinates or prepares work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for drainage contracts.
  4. Coordinates engineering efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, and the contractors.
  5. When delegated, assumes a lead technical role over other engineers or project subgroups for completing specific tasks.
  6. Assists in on-the-job-training of assigned personnel and provides input for their performance evaluations.
  7. Prepares letters to vendors and clients.
  8. Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports or proposals.
  9. Performs or assists in the performance of problem analysis and original design.
  10. Conduct watershed and storm water studies for multiple infrastructure development projects.
  11. Process meteorological, snow, and hydrologic data.
  12. During the Detailed Design Phase, coordinate and conduct integrated design reviews with other engineering disciplines as well as other functional departments such as Construction.
  13. Resolve conflicting design requirements.
  14. Provide support to Construction during the construction phase of the work, including response to construction queries, construction site visits with the external design Consultants and disposition of field change requests.  
  15. Provide support during acceptance activities for drainage systems. Oversee the design consultant’s review of relevant Contractor produced design drawings and material submittals.
  16. Prepares for and attends coordination meetings with the external design Consultants, Construction teams, contractors, and with external review and approval authorities.  
  17. Prepares letters and manages correspondence as required with external design consultants and other external entities as required.
  18. Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.
  19. Reviews and checks work of subordinate engineers and other contractor submittals.

  • Experienced in the application of public planning and design processes. Experience in the management and coordination of relevant impact studies developed by external design consultants.
  • Provide drainage engineering consultation and support during the development of planning studies and other preliminary design activities associated with multiple projects which may include roadways, ports, railways, metro’s, airports, industrial developments, community infrastructure, housing developments, urban reconstruction and storm protection schemes.
  • Knowledge of Civil drainage system design and engineering including hydrology, hydraulics, and construction practices, principles and procedures, support to construction for all drainage works associated with multiple infrastructure development projects.
  • Capable of proposing relevant drainage system design solutions including appropriate effluent treatment and disposal systems based on high level planning data such as average and peak flow volumes relevant to the elements considered.
  • Knowledge of required coordination with other engineering design disciplines, design consultants, client and other legislative approval authorities as required.
  • Must have experience of managing external design consultants.  
  • Must have a working knowledge of sustainability and its integration into the design.
  • Knowledge of performing detailed design and have experience of detailed design phase, including providing oversight of external design consultant’s work during this process.
  • Experience in review and comment on drainage design packages prepared by consultants for multiple projects of varying levels of complexity.  
  • Analyze survey reports, contour maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, or other topographical or geologic data.
  • Experience in quantity estimation, tender preparation, evaluation of bids.
  • Is well experienced with the practices and procedures of International Design Codes and Standards.
  • Has good knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design of drainage systems including appropriate knowledge of CAD (both 2-D and 3-D) and relevant Standard Computer Applications to perform the work i.e WINDES, MicroDrainage, XPSWMM, HE-CRAS.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills in English.  

Demonstrated skill in supervision in a Lead position for minimum 2 to 3 years.


The above is normally acquired through:

  • A recognized degree in Hydrology/Civil engineering or scientific discipline from an accredited college or university with minimum 12 to 15 years’ experience. A Master’s degree will be preferred, OR


  • A professional license in an appropriate engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board, OR


  • Sufficient number of specialized courses in relevant general engineering or appropriate engineering disciplines to meet job requirements, AND


  • Practical work experience in design engineering or relevant equivalent experience in allied types of engineering sufficient to demonstrate competence as a trained engineer.
