Job Summary:
The Senior Engineering Specialist or Principal Engineer – Civil Structural will be responsible for the technical delivery of complex structural systems for commercial power projects. As a designated technical specialist and subject matter expert within the Civil/Structural function for design of heavy foundations subjected to dynamic loads, the primary responsibility will involve leading teams executing the analysis and design of turbine-generator and machine foundations for multiple projects.
In this role, you will utilize individual technical knowledge to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate the technical engineering aspects for complex projects. You will have oversight of design, development, modification, evaluation, and constructability reviews of civil/structural components and processes. Your technical guidance and recommendations will ensure that the structural designs meet the unique and complex requirements.
Major Responsibilities:
- Plans and implements independent scope of work and technical specifications for Civil/Structural design and field investigations on large size projects or assignments in support of different global business units
- Leads the design, development, modification, and evaluation of Civil/Structural components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures, design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs)
- Provides technical oversight for engineering execution of structural designs using advanced static and dynamic finite element modeling and analysis techniques
- Leads and participates in technical discussions with machine vendors and clients to discuss foundation design requirements and ensure that the analyses and designs of machine foundations follow the right direction.
- Develops conceptual designs for Civil/Structural engineering projects or projects having specialized or unique requirements
- Coordinates with Geotechnical Engineering to establish design parameters for design of machine foundations
- Reviews complex Civil/Structural engineering deliverables, such as concrete and structural steel calculations, specifications, and material requisitions
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and supports implementation and assists with performance reporting
- Establishes detailed project execution plan and the development of the overall project Civil/Structural engineering budget and schedule. Reviews project Civil/Structural engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and takes corrective action when required
- Mentors Civil/Structural engineering personnel by providing on-the-job training for their professional development
- Interprets new or special regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance requirements
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Senior Engineering Specialist: Requires a bachelor's in civil engineering and 15+ years of relevant structural engineering experience. Candidates with a master’s degree in structural engineering will be preferred.
- Principal Engineer: Requires a bachelor's in civil engineering and 20+ years of relevant structural engineering experience. Candidates with a master’s degree in structural engineering will be preferred.
- Has an active US Professional Engineering (PE) license or ability/motivation to obtain a PE license within 12 months of joining.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- 10+ years of experience with analysis and design of turbine generator (or similar) foundations for Simple Cycle or Combined Cycle power projects
- Advanced knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards and design criteria/ technical requirements of various machine supplier (GE, Siemens, MHI, etc.)
- Expert knowledge of structural dynamics and finite element analysis fundamentals, including use of software such as ANSYS (preferred), GT-STRUDL, SAP2000, STAAD, etc.
- Good knowledge of and experience with soil and pile dynamic impedances and static stiffness computations for large dynamic machine foundations.
- Recognized as an expert with specialized skill set
- Having wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways
- Knowledgeable about emerging trends and influences best practices within discipline
