Job Summary:
Bechtel is looking for an employment lawyer to join its Global Labor and Employment Law team to provide support to Bechtel’s business and other stakeholders in India. This lawyer will be based in Bechtel’s Gurugram office and handle responsibilities with minimal supervision.
Reports to the Senior Counsel, Global Employment & Labor and operates with minimal guidance, receiving overall direction on key matters. Maintains regular communication with India management and teams (HR, finance, procurement), external advisors, global teams, and HR to ensure legal compliance across the organization.
Major Responsibilities:
- Act as a trusted legal advisor to HR, Employee Relations, and business teams on end‑to‑end employment and labor law matters.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Indian labor and employment laws across Bechtel offices and projects.
- Draft, review, and update employment terms, HR policies, and workforce documentation.
- Advise on employee consultations, labor authority filings, investigations, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
- Manage employment‑related disputes, including demand letters, litigation, arbitration, and engagement with external counsel.
- Prepare and negotiate employment, consulting, secondment, and agency agreements for India operations.
- Monitor regulatory and labor code developments and advise senior stakeholders on legal risks and mitigation.
- Drive labor law and establishment compliance, anticipating governance and regulatory changes.
- Deliver training and knowledge‑sharing programs on labor and employment law for HR and management.
- Represent Bechtel India in labor and employment proceedings and engage with regulators and external advisors.
- Enable clear and proactive communication between India stakeholders and global legal teams.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- India qualified lawyer with relevant legal experience of 8-10 years in a law firm or in-house legal team. Licensed in good standing to practice law in one or more states in India.
- Significant experience in providing advice to multi-national organizations, with proven ability to match legal expertise to commercial business context.
- Excellent knowledge of federal and state labor and employment laws and regulations
- Excellent technical, analytical and decision-making skills together with an ability to communicate, both verbal and written, in a commercial and non-technical manner.
- Demonstrated commitment to high ethical standards
- Experience with a full-service law firm in India.
- Sound judgment and ability to maintain effective contacts with internal departments, outside counsel, customers, and vendors as appropriate.
- Self-motivated and solution driven.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and manage deadlines in a fast-based and demanding work environment and perform under pressure.
- A strong commitment to professionalism.
- Fluent in English, both verbal and written
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Qualified Indian lawyer, licensed and in good standing
- Experience in leading Indian law firms and/or in-house legal teams
- Strong background advising multinational organizations
- Expertise in Indian federal and state labor & employment laws
- Commercially focused with strong analytical and decision‑making skills
- Able to communicate complex legal issues clearly to non‑legal stakeholders
- Demonstrated high ethical standards and sound judgment
- Effective in managing internal stakeholders, external counsel, customers, and vendors
- Self‑motivated, solution‑oriented, and able to work under pressure
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage competing priorities
- Committed to professionalism
- Fluent in spoken and written English
