Job Summary:
The primary function of this position is the timely preparation and filing of assigned federal, state and local income and franchise tax returns, state annual reports, electronic filings as required by statute, and support/input for estimated tax computations, and related processes. This includes financial data extraction, preparation and review of financial data for assigned tax return entities, Schedule M book to tax analysis of financial statement expenses and income, computing deferred tax assets/liabilities, related tax planning and research, tax provision computation and tax forecasting, as well as support for federal and state tax audits.
This position will be reporting to a supervisor located in Glendale, AZ.
Major Responsibilities:
- Support estimated tax computations, tax return and reporting information, tax forecasts, financial statement tax provision, Schedule M book to tax analysis, and Deferred Tax Account information, as assigned.
- Develop detail/analysis supporting computations of tax, financial and estimated tax schedules, work papers and disclosures. Analyze results to identify opportunities for minimization as well as exposures relating to federal and state taxes. Coordinate with Tax Compliance/Audit Manager, and where appropriate, with the staff in International Tax and US Tax Strategy, as needed, to obtain input to ensure planning is incorporated into returns, and tax return questions are properly answered.
- Ensure that all return amounts are based on supportable tax minimization. Ensure compliance with all relevant tax authorities and rules. Follow departmental review procedures, practices and instructions in preparing tax returns, reports and filings, supporting the process to arrange for tax payments and timely filing using proper protective procedures. Assist in primary reviews and testing of departmental output, as requested.
- Observe the highest professional and personal ethical standards, including following Bechtel Leadership Covenants.
- Identify technical, procedural, or factual issues, conduct basic tax research, and bring tax risks or ambiguities to the attention of the Tax Compliance Manager.
- Respond to inquiries from tax authorities; manage refund claims and answer state notices as assigned/agreed with/by manager, keeping manager fully informed.
- Support federal and state income and franchise tax audits as assigned, including IRS or state Information Document Request (IDR) responses, coordinating all responses with manager.
- Participate, as assigned, in tax forecasting and tax provision processes, look back computations, basis computations, and any requested corporation special projects.
- Support the preparation of tax related information materials as directed for management presentations, as assigned.
- Participate in professional organizations (including Tax Executives Institute), attend tax seminars and conferences, as authorized, and take Bechtel University courses as part of professional continuing education.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Accounting or comparable undergraduate degree required.
- Master’s in Taxation degree desirable.
- CPA or Enrolled Agent desirable.
- At least 6 years tax compliance experience, with industry and/or Big 4 accounting firm.
- Engineering and/or Construction industry experience a plus.
- Corporation and partnership experience is highly desirable.
- Grade Level 25 or 26: the grade level hired at will be commensurate with the professional training, experience, and qualifications of the candidate.
- Full-time telework with occasional meetings in the office as required.
- 9/80 work schedule available.
- No relocation authorized for this position. Must have right to work in the U.S.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Federal and multistate tax return and provision experience/skills, including knowledge of tax rules, rulings, administrative pronouncements, and regulations in federal and state income tax compliance areas.
- Strong GAAP accounting and tax accounting skills.
- Partnership/JV taxation experience desirable but not required.
- Motivated for continuous learning of unfamiliar or evolving areas of US taxation.
- Quantitative orientation with curiosity about why results come out the way they do.
- Modeling and “What If” skills required.
- Superior Excel proficiency required.
- Macros and programming skills a plus.
- Familiarity with databases and SharePoint a plus.
- Experience in tax return software (OneSource, Corptax, BNA Fixed Assets or other depreciation system) highly desirable.
- Experience in Oracle, Hyperion and/or CFAR financial systems a plus.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Manager/team head experience a plus.
- Works well in team environment.
- Highest ethical standards.
