Payroll Tax Analyst

Responsible for the state and federal tax deposits, filings and reporting for all U.S. Bechtel manual, non-manual, and expatriate employees.  May perform similar functions for Canadian national employees and for expatriates working in Canada.


Assignment calls for strong judgement and resourcefulness to resolve problems when solutions may not be obvious. Will work closely with other payroll tax members, state tax offices, payroll team, corporate tax and human resources.


Major responsibilities include:  collection of payroll tax downloads, balancing of payroll tax data, processing timely deposits from multiple payroll sources, quarterly and yearly reconciliation of daily payroll unit balances and payments paid/due. Preparation of federal, state and local income tax returns, state unemployment tax returns, prior quarter and year adjustments and amended federal, state or local tax returns; quarterly and annual reporting including W-2s; federal and state electronic media preparation and submission. Maintenance of state unemployment rate information and communication of rate updates to all payroll units. 


Duties require knowledge of state and federal tax withholding and reporting requirements. Processing diligence is a must in order to prevent company exposure to tax penalties/assessments, and to ensure a high degree of compliance with federal, state and local payroll tax regulations.  Duties may also include master file maintenance of the Tax Gathering System (TGS) and MasterTax records. Must be analytical, a problem solver with an eye toward process improvement.


Basic Qualifications:

  • The preferred candidate will have BS/BA in Accounting or Finance from an accredited school with 5 years of payroll tax processing experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, candidate should have 10 years of payroll tax processing experience.
  • Must have the legal right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

  • Excellent schedule management and prioritization skills essential for daily, weekly, and/or quarterly tasks with conflicting deadlines.
  • Must be able to work well with others in a team environment and operate under pressure during busy season
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research and analysis, think critically, and offer solutions
  • Knowledge of basic payroll theory and functional payroll concepts
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work unscheduled overtime
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s general ledger and chart of accounts
  • Must have the legal right to work in US without sponsorship
