Project Overview:
Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.
This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come.
This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.
Job Summary:
Bechtel’s internship program was created to cultivate real-life industry interest based on hands-on experience. Many new university graduate hires have begun their careers at Bechtel as a summer intern.
Bechtel has a strong commitment to protecting people and the environment as part of its mission, and is known for industry leadership in Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H, also known as HSE). ES&H teams are comprised of three distinct disciplines that collectively support our ES&H Management System and processes at project sites and offices. These teams include environmental scientists, safety professionals, and industrial hygiene scientists. Collectively, they provide technical guidance and perform planning, risk assessment, inspections and monitoring, training, and data management.
ES&H Interns help develop and execute the environmental component of an ES&H program. Key activities involve administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. The position involves practical application of biology, ecology, chemistry, social sciences, and related disciplines for managing environmental aspects of a project or facility.

Major Responsibilities:
ES&H interns may be responsible for the following:
- Helping integrate environmental requirements into project planning, permitting, design, construction, and operations.
- Assisting with development and implementation of environmental permits, plans, and studies.
- Helping with site assessments and surveys to identify site conditions and develop mitigation and sustainability strategies to protect the environment and local communities.
- Assisting with technical guidance and support regarding mitigation measures pertaining to natural and cultural resources and communities.
- Providing technical assistance within ES&H teams and to other project groups regarding permitting, risk assessment, plan preparation, studies, and ES&H program execution.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of Environmental Management Plans and associated plans and procedures.
- Helping identify and track environmental issues, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder concerns.
- Participating in emergency response, and aids investigation and resolution of ES&H incidents.
- Performing environmental monitoring, sampling, and inspections to confirm compliance with permits and project requirements and commitments.
- Preparing training documents and helps implement training for project/facility employees and visitors.
- Participating in meetings with customers, project/facility team members, and contractors and subcontractors to advise them of environmental requirements that may affect their work.
- Performing data management, trend analysis, and report preparation and review.
- Assisting other team members in ES&H program execution, inclusive of safety and health.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s of Science or Master’s of Science degree program with a focus in environmental sciences, biological sciences, natural resources, or related environmental or safety applicable disciplines from an accredited college or university
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Minimum Qualifications
- Completed at least one year of studies in one of the above fields
- Active student status, in a strong academic standing
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Polish
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office for activities such as data management, report preparation, and preparing presentations
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of environmental impact assessment and mitigation strategies
- Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.
- Ability to research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 Management System standards.
- Prior work experience related to environmental or biological (field) sciences.
