Senior Project Manager - Sustainability Projects & Carbon Reduction

Project Overview 

This position is for an aviation project in Ireland. Bechtel will be working in an integrated team with our client to support the delivery of a Capital Investment Plan of circa €2bn within an operating airport environment. 


The ideal candidate would be a team player capable of adaptation to an integrated team environment. A driven self-starter, confident, agile, articulate and capable of leading change by example. Collaborative and flexible to meet all the demands of the client. 


Role Overview 

The Senior Project Manager is responsible for managing a group of projects from planning and design through to the successful completion and commissioning; delivering the projects safely to time, to budget and to specification, ensuring the projects achieve all project goals and objectives in accordance with the client’s requirements. 


Main Responsibilities 

  • Act as early stage Project Manager where projects in concept stage until they can be handed to project teams to deliver
  • Works with Sustainability Manager in developing sustainability projects from concept through to inception, handover to delivery programmes and ongoing monitoring of projects for progress relative to our sustainability goals
  • Management of the minimum sustainability standards and oversight structure for reporting and informing project governance decisions to ensure the sustainability benefits are protected while supporting other business (cost & schedule) objectives.
  • Oversee and monitor the delivery of the project around schedule, interface, cost, variations, contract and risk, liaising with the relevant team members and functions as required to achieve sustainability goals 
  • Develop the Project Execution Plan, ensuring the project is aligned to and delivers in accordance with the client’s standards and methods 
  • Engage with and manage the project relationship with stakeholders 
  • Lead the coordination of the project ensuring interfaces are considered and addressed at all stages of the project lifecycle 
  • Work with the technical teams in coordinating and managing design consultants and other external service providers 
  • Organise design review meetings and take responsibility for communicating design acceptance and change 
  • Maintain the project risk register  
  • Monitor and apply performance management techniques 
  • Manage the change control process 
  • Manage the flow of project information between the team and the client, through regular meetings and written communications 


NEC Specific Activities 

  • Review and accept programme submissions 
  • Lead and act in the spirit of mutual trust and co-operation 
  • Communicate and issue documents as required by the ECC contract and perform any other duties as stated in the contract 
  • Maintaining close contact with the Client in order to ensure the Project Manager’s actions reflect the client’s objectives for the project  
  • Manage the compensation event process so that the Contractors are fairly compensated for any client-initiated change 
  • Ensure the Contractor notifies compensation events in good time so that the client is not disadvantaged 
  • Assess payment after each assessment interval 



  • Minimum 15 years experience in the Construction / Infrastructure sector including on relevant aviation projects 
  • Understanding of operating in a live airport site 
  • Experience of operating on site, not just office based 
  • Tangible experience of documenting best practice construction project management policies and standards. 
  • Familiarity with sustainability goals and requirements (e.g. energy efficiency, greenhouse gas reductions, BREEAM/LEED rating system certifications)
  • Track record of delivering construction/asset delivery projects to time and within allocated budget;  
  • Knowledge of operating as a client’s project manager 
  • Experience of dealing with a range of stakeholders at all levels across an organisation influencing the improvement of process and guidance to support project delivery. 



  • Managing a multidisciplinary team across multiple concurrent projects 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to govern and drive outcomes to ensure project outputs that meet required standards 
  • Knowledge of NEC and FIDIC suite of contracts 
  • Knowledge of Engineering and Project Management Principles 
  • Planning capability and ability to use Oracle Primavera 6 scheduling system 
  • Report writing skills 


Basic & Preferred Qualifications 

  • University degree in either Project Management or an Engineering Discipline Preferred 
  • Professional memberships - RICS, CIOB, APM or equivalent 
  • PRINCE2 or equivalent preferred
