Role Overview:



Responsible for the development and implementation of the environmental management program on an assigned project. Provides technical oversight of the project’s environmental compliance activities through identification and integration of applicable environmental requirements into project designs, subcontract bid specifications, construction plans, and schedules, and all other field execution activities. Works directly with other project-level functional leads (e.g., engineering, construction, etc) to assist them in integrating and/or addressing the applicable environmental requirements in their work products and activities. Coordinates with the global business unit Environmental Services Manager regarding significant project environmental issues and environmental services (ES) support needs. Responsible for project-assigned ES personnel in the office and/or field. Reports operationally to either the project ES&H Manager in Mansourah Massarah Gold Project (MMPG) or to the Project or Construction Supervision. Functionally reports to the corporate Manager of Environmental Services.


 Principal Responsibilities:

•                    Develops and helps implement the project-level environmental management program.

•                    Provides assistance to project and construction management in identifying and complying with project environmental requirements and in addressing environmental issues as they arise during project execution.

•                    Coordinates with and provides technical assistance to other project-assigned functional leads (e.g., engineering, subcontracts, procurement, project controls) with regards to compliance with project-specific environmental requirements.

•                    Participates in meetings with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise them of environmental requirements that may affect project design, schedule, and cost.

•                    Provides technical support and assistance directly to construction supervision and subcontractors in planning and executing field activities in accordance with the project environmental requirements.

•                    Responsible for drafting Environmental Compliance Plans, Construction Environmental Control Plans (CECP), project-specific mitigation plans, environmental awareness training programs, and technical reports.

•                    Conducts environmental compliance inspections of project construction activities to monitor compliance with environmental requirements including contractual commitments, permits, and the project’s CECP.

•                    Implements personnel policies (e.g., conducts employee performance evaluations) and provides technical direction to staff.

•                    Prior experience and demonstrated skills in performing the required duties. Devises new approaches to technical problems encountered and provides technical direction for specific tasks as technical lead including making assignments to subordinate environmental scientists/engineers. Requires broad background in Bechtel administrative procedures.

Basic Qualifications:


•      Bachelor of Science Degree in life sciences (e.g., biology, ecology, forestry) or physical sciences (e.g., geology, meteorology), or environmental engineering from an accredited college or university and at least 9 years of related professional progressive experience or in lieu of a formal degree, at least 15 years related professional progressive experience.

•        Must be physically capable to conduct field inspections and participate in project walkdowns which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing in very small and/or confined spaces, and lifting to 60 lbs.

•        Knowledge of environmental sciences/engineering systems, principles, and methodologies.

•        Knowledge of national and international environmental laws/regulations and regulatory/resource agencies’ permitting processes and responsibilities, industry standards for environmental compliance, and best management practices for minimizing potential environmental impacts during project execution.

•        Experience in managing and/or providing technical oversight of environmental subcontractors or consultants.

•        Experience in environmental monitoring and compliance inspection during construction.

•        Knowledge of hazardous materials and waste management, erosion and sediment control methods, and restoration techniques.

•        Advanced knowledge in a field of science, environmental engineering, or related discipline.

•        Knowledge of engineering and construction systems, methods, and work processes.

•        Knowledge of construction planning, estimating, procedures, and execution.

•        Skilled in oral and written communication.


Preferred Qualifications:


•                    Knowledge of Bechtel’s organizational structure, functions, and administrative procedures.

•                    Knowledge of Bechtel standard computer applications.
