Bechtel has a strong commitment to protecting people and the environment as part of its mission, and is known for industry leadership in Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H). ES&H teams are comprised of three distinct disciplines that support our ES&H Management System and processes at project sites and offices. These teams include environmental scientists, safety professionals, and industrial hygiene scientists. Collectively, they provide technical guidance and perform planning, risk assessment, inspections and monitoring, training, and data management.

 

An opportunity exists to work within the ES&H team at our Cardinal Project located in New Albany, Ohio.

 

Position Summary:

The Project Environmental Manager helps develop and execute the environmental component of an Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) program. Key activities involve administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements.  The position involves practical application of biology, ecology, chemistry, social sciences, and related disciplines for managing environmental aspects of a project or facility.  The position reports to an ES&H Manager or Environmental Manager.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manages the project-level environmental program on a large-scale or complex project, inclusive of technical and administrative aspects and environmental compliance activities. 
  • Executes assignments involving an array of scientific, environmental, and social issues requiring independent judgment and experience in the application of environmental methods and plans.
  • Interprets and integrates environmental and sustainability requirements and issues into proposals, planning documents, permit applications, design criteria, construction plans, schedules, and subcontract documents for major projects.
  • Provides input on bid decisions, proposal development, and estimates with respect to integration and compliance with environmental and sustainability requirements.
  • Interprets requirements and provides technical support and guidance regarding environmental mitigation tasks, controls, sustainability concepts, and protection of environmentally sensitive areas, species, and communities.
  • Provides recommendations for ES&H procedures, work processes, and improvement measures.
  • Prepares technical reports and permit applications.
  • Performs environmental assessments and surveys to identify site conditions and develop mitigation and sustainability strategies to protect the environment and local communities.
  • Provides technical guidance and support regarding mitigation measures pertaining to natural and cultural resources and communities.
  • Provides technical assistance within ES&H teams and to other project groups regarding permitting, risk assessment, plan preparation, studies, and ES&H program execution.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the project Environmental Management Plan and associated plans and procedures. 
  • Identifies and tracks environmental issues, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder concerns. 
  • Writes scopes of work for environmental subcontractors, and serves as subcontract technical representative for specialized studies and support services. 
  • Participates in emergency response, and aids investigation and resolution of ES&H incidents.
  • Performs environmental monitoring, sampling, and inspections to confirm compliance with permits and project requirements and commitments. 
  • Prepares training documents and helps with ES&H training for project/facility employees and visitors.
  • Builds relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participates in meetings with customers, project/facility team members, and contractors and subcontractors to advise them of environmental requirements that may affect their work.
  • Analyzes data, tracks ES&H performance and trends, and prepares technical reports. 
  • Coordinates with the project ES&H Manager, and global business unit ES&H Manager, regarding significant environmental issues.
  • Supervises project-assigned environmental personnel.
  • Supports execution of the project ES&H program by assisting other team members, inclusive of all ES&H disciplines.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university or college in an applicable technical discipline such as environmental science, ecology, biology, natural resources, or related disciplines with 12 or more years of relevant experience; or a Master of Science degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university or college in an applicable technical discipline such as environmental science, ecology, biology, natural resources, or related disciplines with 10 or more years of relevant experience. 
  • Specialized technical skills, knowledge, and understanding within an applicable environmental discipline.
  • Ability to research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills for preparing presentations, data management, and report preparation.
  • Prior work experience related to applicable environmental sciences, regulatory requirements, and impact assessment.
  • Adaptable and able to work outdoors in a field environment under various project site and weather conditions.
  • Ability to support various work shifts, as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Additional Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 14001 Management System standards, and internal auditor certification for ISO 14001.
  • Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities.
  • Knowledge and experience with environmental impact assessment and mitigation strategies.
