Project Overview:

The Eva Copper Mine Project is a greenfield resource poised to become the largest new mine in Queensland, Australia. It is located in Cloncurry, QLD on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon people. The Project is owned by Harmony, a world-class gold and copper mining and development company with assets in South Africa, Australia, and Papua New Guinea.

 

Bechtel is delivering the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) scope for the Eva Copper Process Plant and Non-Process Infrastructure and providing these services across all disciplines and functions for this exciting capital project.

Job Summary:

The Senior Field Cost Engineer is responsible for delivering effective cost control, reporting, and forecasting from the construction site during the execution phase of an EPC project. This role ensures accurate tracking of field progress, construction performance, resource usage, field changes, and cost impacts. Working closely with construction, contracts, planning, and project controls leadership, the Senior Field Cost Engineer supports timely decision-making, contributes to the development of recovery plans when needed, and ensures alignment with the overall project cost objectives.

 

This role is offered on a FIFO basis to Cloncurry, QLD, operating on a 2 weeks on/ 1 Week off roster.

Major Responsibilities:

Field Cost Control & Tracking

  • Maintain detailed visibility of field costs, including labour, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and construction services.
    Track daily and weekly cost performance, productivity trends, and quantities installed to support accurate earned value assessments.
    Validate actuals, accruals, commitments, and time-phased budgets for all field activities.

Forecasting & Reporting

  • Prepare and update field-level cost forecasts, ensuring alignment with project progress and trends.
    Lead field cost review sessions with construction managers, discipline leads, and project controls teams.
    Provide clear and timely insights into cost drivers, productivity issues, and potential overruns.

 

Field Change Management

  • Prepare cost impact assessments for change notices, design clarifications, construction deviations, and rework events.
    Coordinate with contracts and engineering to ensure field variations are captured, validated, and submitted in accordance with project procedures.

Integration with Construction & Planning

  • Collaborate with the planning/scheduling team to ensure accurate earned value calculations and integration between schedule progress and field cost performance.
    Participate in daily and weekly construction meetings to obtain updates on progress, constraints, and manpower allocation.

Contractor & Subcontractor Cost Oversight

  • Review and validate contractor progress claims, invoices, and cost-loaded schedules.
    Monitor subcontractor performance against agreed quantities, rates, and milestones.
    Provide input during contract administration, including variation assessments and negotiations.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) in Engineering, Construction Management, Finance, or related field and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience 
  • Minimum 8–10 years of cost engineering experience, with at least 5 years in field cost control on EPC/EPCM scope or major construction projects.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Working Rights in Australia without employer sponsorship are required.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, progress measurement, labour productivity, and cost tracking.
  • Experience with cost control software (EcoSys, or similar).
  • Proficiency in earned value analysis and integration with schedule performance.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a construction environment with multidisciplinary teams.
