Position Summary

Provide design leadership and Life Safety Systems expertise for the Advanced Technology Facilities, Mission Critical, Electronics, and other High-Tech Infrastructure industries as assigned in the M&T global business unit. Life Safety Systems Engineer will apply diverse knowledge of engineering principles and practices to a broad variety of assignments and related fields making decisions regarding engineering complexities and methods. Makes decisions concerning problems within the discipline on the project. Represents the discipline on the project and with the client as directed to resolve technical questions.

 

Typical Responsibilities

  • Provides technical guidance to subordinate designers and drafters as assigned.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates and reviews design work within a medium-size discipline work group on projects of medium size or assignments in support of global business unit.
  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of discipline engineers, scientists, specialists, designers and drafters.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
  • Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
  • Develops Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.
  • Coordinates with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work.
  • Reviews and approves key engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries.
  • Coordinates assigned design work with other project groups.
  • Mentors designers and drafters by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.
  • Promotes the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of systems, equipment, applications of design methods, materials, and computers for preparation of analyses and development of project design deliverables within the Life Safety Systems discipline to include Fire Alarm, Security, EWSD, and Toxic Gas Monitoring.
  • Possess a broad knowledge of the major design engineering deliverables. Has knowledge of various stages of project cycle like Proposal, FEED, detail engineering, and Construction.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical and cost issues related to selection of design features within the discipline.
  • Managed work using Standard Application Programs and appropriate computer aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools.
  • Knowledge of developing Fire Alarm System networks and device layouts, Emergency Voice Evacuation Systems, Air Sampling Detection (i.e. VESDA), Toxic Gas Monitoring Network Infrastructure along with single point and area detection requirements, as well as interfacing with other discipline systems as it relates to Life Safety Systems.
  • Coordinates engineering effort in assigned areas between Engineering Technologies and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, contractors, and between other groups.
  • Familiar with the industry and regulatory codes and standards to include NFPA 72, NEC, NFPA 318, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, IBC, as well as design criteria pertinent to the engineering discipline.
  • Experience in providing technical support to Construction, as well as guiding and resolving queries submittal reviews.
  • Knowledge in development and application of battery and voltage drop calculations, cable tray and conduit fill calculations, elevator recall interface, device selection for hazards material, corrosive, and explosion classified areas.
  • Good knowledge of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Extensive experience of delivering basic and detailed design, construction, and project coordination of High-Tech/Semiconductor facility Engineering Technology Systems (Fire Alarm, TGMS).
  • Extensive combined Engineering and Construction Team leadership experience.
  • Preferred NICET Level II or III Fire Alarm System Certification.
  • Experience in an Engineering office or consultancy to the High-Tech Industry – especially Semiconductors. Candidate will be familiar with applicable codes, standards, and local practices.
  • Knowledge in use of industry standard software (CAD, REVIT, Navisworks, Xtralis, Microsoft Suites) is desirable.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
  • Possesses strong applicable experience in project design/execution with previous demonstrated experience and ability in the specific discipline.
  • Prior work experience for the supervision of an engineering discipline on a project.
  • Prior work experience being responsible for the engineering progress and performance reporting within a project earned value management system and change management program.
