Project Overview:

Bechtel, a global leader in project management, engineering, procurement and construction, has been selected by Western Sydney Airport Co as its Delivery Partner for the Western Sydney Airport, a $5.3 billion greenfield facility in Badgerys Creek, New South Wales. This will be a landmark project for both New South Wales and Australia and is due for completion at the end of 2026.

Western Sydney Airport will provide much-needed additional aviation capacity to meet growing demand in the Sydney basin and improve access to flights for people in Western Sydney. One of Australia's most significant infrastructure projects in decades, the international and domestic airport will open in 2026, bringing social and economic prosperity to the Western Sydney region. Job Summary:

As an Area Manager you will report directly to the Project Delivery Office manager.

You will be a key individual supporting the Delivery Partner’s (DPs) role in providing Project Management services and deliverables. In performing this role, the Area Manager will be familiar with the contract terms, scope, and requirements and will work as part of the broader DP package management team to fulfil the DP obligations. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Actively ensure Contractors are complying with safety requirements and encourage Contractors to perform their work in a safe manner
  • Actively ensure Contractors are aware of and comply with environmental requirements and encourage Contractors to comply with all environmental expectations
  • Plans and coordinates independent work requiring judgement and experience in the application and adaption of construction techniques.
  • Devises new approaches to technical problems Attend weekly progress meetings between Contractors, Subcontractors, DP, and WSA for the assigned works
  • Actively interface with WSA departments involved in the Design management, Construction Interface, Work Health and Safety, Environment and Sustainability, Contract Management and other relevant teams to ensure PDO delivery priorities are maintained whilst avoiding impacts to airport operational trials
  • Review existing as-built documentation, including BIM models, to enable the assessment and development of solutions needed to allow fit out works for tenants and operators within the airport
  • Review project design and construction progress against approved schedules, evaluate changes and advise corrective action when required Input, review and expedite trend estimates for items extending beyond the current scope of works and approved budgets by WSA 
  • Report on design and construction aspects of the assigned works, maintain regular WSA contact for progress of work and, exchange of information and advice, as necessary
  • Support and coordinate with the various WSA departments the reviews of Contractors’ work plans and schedule, monitor progress, identify interfaces and ensure these are addressed in a timely manner to enable works to be complete on time and on budget and without impacting airport operational trials
  • Perfom regular schedule assessment reviews with DP Planner and work with other PDO Area Managers 
  • Review the flow of information required from third parties to facilitate the timely progress of the design and construction works
  • Bring both cost and schedule changes/deviations to the attention of the Project Delivery Office manager for inclusion in the project Critical Items Action Report, Project Trend Register, weekly and monthly reports
  • Communicate technical issues and recommend solutions as required
  • Complete and assists with project weekly and monthly reporting to management Review Contractor productivity and progress against plan and proactively engage with the Contractor to initiate improvements where required Monitor and confirm progress reporting and payment certificates

Education and Experience Requirements:

 Required bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10  years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in the delivery of building works covering either Civil/Structural/architectural works or MEP works.
  • Experience working with and managing contracts. 
  • Demonstrated experience in either design management or construction coordination and supervision.
  • Advanced skill in oral and written communication. Direct interface with the customer is a key part of this role. Experience in leading meetings with multiple stakeholders and issuing formal correspondence is desired.
  • Able to troubleshoot issues confidently, and to provide instruction on how to resolve issues identified.
  • Interpersonal skills and able to interact closely with client and contractors while maintaining necessary levels of commercial awareness. 
  • Demonstrated skill in project management. 
  • Knowledge on Building Information Modelling and its uses within design management or construction works is desired.
