Project Overview:

Bechtel has a strong commitment to protecting people and the environment as part of its mission, and is known for industry leadership in Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH).  ESH teams are comprised of three distinct disciplines that support our ESH Management System and processes at project sites and offices. These teams include environmental scientists, safety specialists, and industrial hygiene scientists. Collectively, they provide technical guidance and perform planning, risk assessment, inspections and monitoring, training, and data management. 

Job Summary:

In this role, you will lead a high-performance team to develop and manage complex Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) project programs. You will assist functional leads to ensure requirements are properly integrated and be responsible for overall project ES&H execution. Your leadership will help achieve ES&H performance expectations, compliance, and continuous improvement.    #LI-AE2 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Supervises an Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) program on a project inclusive of technical and administrative aspects; compliance activities; and processes and plans associated with all three ESH disciplines (including medical). 
  • Supervises EHS personnel and facilitates their development through assignments, coaching, and mentoring.  
  • Assures that ESH requirements are properly interpreted and integrated in planning documents, design criteria, construction and operational plans, schedules, training programs, and subcontract documents. 
  • Applies Bechtel’s ESH Management System and standards to achieve, maintain, and continually improve EHS program execution. 
  • Assures support within ESH teams and to Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, Operations, Legal, Contracts, Procurement, Management, and other functions regarding ESH requirements. 
  • Manages budgets, schedules, and resources for interpreting and implementing ESH requirements, evaluating risks, and developing suitable plans and methods for a robust ESH program.  
  • Helps write and oversees implementation of Environmental Management Plans, Safety and Health Management Plans, and other ESH plans in compliance with Bechtel’s ESH Management System, standards, and contract and regulatory requirements. 
  • Establishes ESH emergency preparedness planning and confirms the investigation and resolution of ESH incidents. 
  • Conducts assessments and inspections, and participates in audits, to confirm ESH compliance with contractual commitments, laws and regulations, environmental permit requirements, and Bechtel standards. 
  • Confirms that environmental permitting, specialized studies, assessments, reports, and regulatory submittals are completed as required.  

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) related to environmental, safety, health or science-related discipline and 10-13  years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience
     

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience developing, implementing, and sustaining ESH management systems and risk‑based programs aligned with Bechtel standards and recognized international frameworks, including ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.  
  • Strong analytical and computer skills to support ESH data management, performance trending, dashboards, reporting, and decision‑making.  
  • Demonstrated expertise in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action management, including experience with continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma.  
  • Ability to lead ESH risk identification and mitigation efforts with an understanding of potential impacts to project cost, schedule, and reputation. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey ESH requirements, risks, and expectations to craft professionals, project leadership, clients, and senior management. 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, support varied work shifts, and adapt to changing project conditions.  
  • Experience working in active construction and field environments, including the ability to perform site inspections and work outdoors under varying weather conditions.  
  • Knowledge of ESH contractual requirements, subcontractor performance management, and commercial risk considerations related to ESH non‑compliance. 
  • Valid driver’s license. 


Additional Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences. 
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 Management System standards and certified as an ISO 45001 internal auditor. 
  • Professional certification (e.g., ASP, OHST, CSP, CIH) or progress toward certification is highly desirable. 
  • Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities. 
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing multi‑discipline ESH teams on large or complex projects, including supervision, coaching, and performance management.  
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable environmental, safety, and health laws, regulations, and industry standards, with the ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements to project execution.  
  • Proven ability to interface directly with clients, regulatory agencies, and auditors during inspections, audits, and enforcement actions, including preparation and delivery of executive‑level briefings.
